Xtreme Bulls Tour Results From  Tulsa, OK
by Sheila Totten
With a record  that earned him the nickname of Mr . Rodeo, PRCA World Champion Jim Shoulders, the holder of 16 PRCA World Titles including  7 in Bull Riding, five All Arounds and 4 in Bareback Bronc Riding scored another record by returning  the Pace Picante Winter Finale to Tulsa ,Oklahoma along with the PRCA's  Xtreme Bulls Tour Event. The entire weekend was billed as The Jim Shoulders'  Western Weekend and the event was held on the weekend of May 12th , 2006.
Shoulders who began Mesquite Rodeo with Neal Gay looked fantastic at the event. As a small child I saw Shoulders compete in person and idolized the man who by then was nearing the age of retirement. I also saw his great bull Tornado who had that "Make My Day" attitude and look while  I was too young to understand  why rodeo bulls who went after barrel men were allowed to buck again. I will never forget that bull going head down into the barrel to crush the red headed clown who was carried out on a stretcher. He was a mean one, that bull, and I am glad that while my husband was riding and drawing   that bull I was only a school girl and did not know Norman .I could not imagine  what it would have been like to see Tornado hospitalize him. How Tracy Hedeman managed to survive all of Tuff's wrecks is beyond me.My hat's off to her courage. If  Norman was riding when I met him I doubt I could be as strong as Tracy in public. I probably would have been a mess.
Howdy Cloud came out aboard Guidry's Bobby Knight who took two leaps straight out before turning left and beating Howdy around the corner. Marcus Michaelis was next aboard I'm Dirty who spun fast to the right away from Marcus' hand  then reversed left. Marcus scored 83.
Thomas Bert drew Classic Pro Rodeo-Scotty Lovelace's Priefert Tough  who went into a flat left spin. Thomas remained  centered and looked good but needed more bull under him as he scored 72. Bobby Welsh Came out aboard Korkow's Action Cat who spun to the right  into Bobby's hand alternating lots of kicking action with no kicking at all. Bobby scored 83.
I didn't get the name of the bull Kanin Asay drew but he bucked hard to the left and managed to step on Kanin's foot and hip when he threw him to the dirt.
Jason McClain came out on Sammy Andrews' Culpepper and made a picture perfect ride as the bull spun to the left away from Jason's hand and Jason remained centered aboard  the big  black bull while scoring 85.
Sammy Andrews' Jimbo spun around to the left and got BJ Schumacher  slid back on his rope and off to the outside.
Andrews' Erks Me  had lots of high kick a she spun to the left into Bryan Richardson's hand in a faster and faster spin. The X Power  readings on the ride were Kick:2.8,Spin : 3.4 with an X Power total rate of 3.41.
Billionaire went to the right  with really bad timing  and had Cody Hancock down  at 6.4.
Matt Austin drew Powder River's Extreme who went to the right into Matt's hand in a drifting spin.Matt was centered throughout the ride  and scored 83.
Casey Baize followed with his own 83 point ride aboard Snakebite who spun fast  into his hand  to the right .
Jarrod Ford was off of Sports Machine early as the bull went to the right bucking hard while Jerry Shepherd scored 83 and made his ride look easy as the bull went to the right away from his hand. Special K went around to the right  into Dustin Elliott's hand but Dustin lost hold with his feet and was down.
Show Off  went to the left away from Sonny Murphy's hand but didn't have much kick as Sonny scored 84. Cajun Moon bucked in place 4 times then spun to the right into Cory Melton's hand  while throwing a roll or two but was unable to get Cory off;and Cory scored 84 .R/W White Diamond went around to the left away from Zack Oakes hand  and just got away from him..These were the only rides shown in the long go and as there were only 13 qualified rides  2 riders were brought back by draws..Among the notables present at the event was Jim Shoulders fellow Henryetta ,OK resident and World Champion Bull Rider Terry Don West .Before the short go they also showed Lane Frost's 1987 NFR winning ride and the bull he rode  looks just like my Blue Norther. Maybe someday his nephew Brian will draw Blue. I would love that.
I have watched Vertical Limit at the CBR and this is one tough bull to get by.He had World Champion Cody Hancock off at 1.12 on the first jump out of the chutes. Holey Moley ,with an X power rate of 2.92 had Thomas Bert off as the bull spun around  into Bert's hand then reversed and got Bert too far back on his arm. Travis Sellers might have broken his wrist in the long go but  he made a great ride aboard Mean Machine in the short go.The  Glenn Southwick/Harlan Robertson/Henry Wilson bull spun to the right into Travis' hand with lots of speed and action and Travis rode him jump for jump while scoring 91  to give him a total of 170 on two. He had told the fans  that he broke a bone in his wrist and tore a ligament and was told not to get on but he did. That's one 'tuff"  cowboy.
Chad Eubanks had 84.5 on one ride  as Spider Man broke or dislocated bullfighter Shorty Gorham's arm. Deuces Wild went into a fast spin to the left with high kicks to get Casey Baize off.
Lucky Strike remains unridden in two years as he dusted Marcus Michaelis as he  took one spin to the left then jumped out of it with an XPower of 2.51
David Bailey's Super Cool fouled Matt Austin at the gate and Matt was given a reride. He drew Dippin XS Energy who went to the left in a hard spin away from his hand then reversed right into Matt's hand.Matt maintained perfect position with aggressive spur action and free arm action.Matt scored 91 and had 174 on two to finish second in the event.
Leroy took two leaps out then spun to the left and beat Jerry Shepherd around the corner.
Bobby Welsh was offered a reride when his bull went right ,bucked in place and then fell down. Bobby separated his shoulder and could not take the reride.
The S/R/W bull Blue Chip took one hard leap to the left and whipped Sonny Murphy down.
Cory Melton simply overrode Cooter who took two spins to the left away from his hand  and beat Cory around the corner.
Jason McClain drew one of my favorite bulls from Vernon Guidry-Hot Damn who took one leap out then spun to the right into Jason's hand with lots of kick and action. This is a great bull. His kick rate was 3.6,spin was 2.8 and all around X Power rate was 3.4. Jason scored 94  and won the event. Jason who now has rode Hot Damn three times told Stran Smith's beautiful wife Jennifer that the bull "kind of took me by surprise when he  went to the right."Jason topped the board with 179 on two head but Matt Austin's second place finish has placed Matt back in first place in the Xtreme Bulls Tour.
