by Sheila Totten
Colby Yates is riding hot this year. With 181.5  points on two head he won the title at  Matt Austin's CBR event held at the Austin Arena in Myrtle Springs ,TX on May 27. Yates earned $3,402 and I bet the budding country singer sang all the way to the bank.
Colby rode  Sammy Andrews' Renna's Pet in the long go to score 88 and come in second in the round. In the short go he made a great ride aboard Robertson/Wilson's Spiderman that thrilled the crowd. Colby scored 93.5 and won the round and the event.
The long go began with a solid ride from McKennon Wimberley aboard R/W's Foolish Man for 88 points. I bet that had daddy Joe grinning ear to ear. Cajun Moon got the best of BJ Schumacher but Robey Condra scored 78.5 on R/W's Rafter Jack.
Harlan and Henry brought some really great bulls and in the first section they sure had their way with  the riders dusting Jesse Schellhamer,Wesley Silcox,Sam Smith,Trent Broussard,Steven Burlin, Trent Cormier and Trevor Harmon.
In the second section it was Bryan Richardson with a great ride aboard R/W's White Diamond for 90.5 and first place in the long go.Just like in the first section between the R/W bulls and Sammy Andrews stock it was bulls 7-cowboys three.Lane Nixon scored 82.5 aboard R/W's Black Powder while Jarrod Craig scored 85.5 aboard R/W's Calvin. Sammy Andrews Hot Spot blanked JB Mauney while R/W's Mercury Rising set World Champion Cody Hancock down early. Predator got the best of Kenny Upton while El Paso beat Cody White. Elsie and Clyde Frost's grandson Brian Frost came down from Sammy's Little Weed early. I like this bull. He's got heart but Sammy has always bred bulls with lots of heart. His Cimarron Outlaw got the best of JD Hoagland while RS' Jimbo  beat Cooper Kanngiesser.
There were actually four qualified rides in the  third section with Colby Yates' second place (in the round) 88 point ride  at the top for the section.Matt Austin scored 84 aboard Sammy Andrews' Mac while Steve Woolsey scored 81.5 aboard Sammy's Cochise. The last score in the round was JW Harris on SA's Red Onion. Sammy's bulls shut out the other six riders as Rockin Sidney blanked Jim Crosby and Culpepper blanked Kane Patterson. X-Man dusted Jeremy Apel while Tar Baby tossed Jeremiah Wilder off. Chimney Sweep got Danny Ted McDowell and Hay Wire dusted Alex Rachel.
It didn't take Edgard Oliveira long to find a place to ride.SA's Amber's Petdusted the Brazilian in the fourth section while Kevin Loudamy's Shazam dumped Jerry Shepherd. Loudamy's RooRoo got Clint Cassell off early and his SJ did the same with Cole Echoles. Clayton Foltyn scored 85.5  aboard SA's Dirt Dobber while Tate Stratton scored 85 on KL's Cha Ching. Pistol Robinson scored 85.5 aboard  SA's Tyrant  while R/W's Tyrone dusted Bonner Bolton. Kyle Joslin scored 84 aboard KL's BB Blue but KL's Devil's Dollar dusted Ronnie Kitchens.
In the short go there were only three qualified rides. Bryan Richardson scored 91 aboard R/W's Blue Chip and was second in the round and the average. Colby Yates ,the event winner took the round with his great 93.5 ride aboard R/W's  Spiderman and third place winner in the round and average Kyle Joslin scored 89 aboard SA's Rompus.SA's Bo's Excuse  dusted McKennon Wimberley with moves like his famed sire  had before he started  the head slinging . Sammy's Fender Bender tossed Pistol Robinson off while R/W's Texas got the best of Clayton Foltyn. R/W's Wild Fang unseated Jarrod Craig and KL's Uncle Charlie got the best of Tate Stratton. R/W's  Bad Whiskey unseated Matt Austin which no one expected and SA's Erks Me beat Lane Nixon. R/W's Mean Machine beat Steve Woolsey and Cheetah got the best of JW Harris. KL's Predator beat Robey Condra while another great bull  R/W's Vertical Limit beat Jim Crosby. R/W's World Champion bull Biloxi Blues dusted Danny Ted McDowell.
McKennon Wimberley was fourth  in the average while Pistol Robinson and Clayton Foltyn tied for 5/6/7 with Jarrod Craig and Tate Stratton was 8th in the event.
Matt Austin remains in first place in the average with $54,684  putting him $24,149 ahead of second place Ronnie Kitchens.  The CBR heads to Vernal ,Utah for the Lane Frost Challenge on June 2&3.
