Clayton Williams Wins The CBR's Tuff Hedeman Louisiana Shoot Out

Clayton Williams Tops The Field At The Tuff Hedeman Shoot Out In Bossier City, La.
by Sheila Totten
It was a crowd cheering night in Bossier City as the bulls and the riders set off  a fireworks display of bucking and riding.Sparks flew as the top four legged athletes did their stuff; keeping the  capacity crowd on the edge of their seatsl. When it was all said and done it was Clayton Williams of Carthage,Texas who walked away with the CBR's First event title of the new season. He had the crowd roaring as he turned in a picture perfect textbook ride aboard Jesse Hill's Mucked Out for 89.5 in the first round . He entered the short go in third place  and had his work cut out for him as including his great 92.5 ride aboard Harlan Robertson's Texas there were six 90 point or better rides in the round.
It was an action filled night and both riders and bulls were at their best.Seven riders earned eight American War Hero 90 Point Club bonuses of $500.They were Bryan Richardson  and Justin Hermanson who tied for first in the long go with 90 points, and in the short go:Chad Castillo,90;)Justin Hermanson ,91 ; Howdy Cloud, 91; Zack Brown,91.5; Corey Davis, 92; and Clayton Williams, 92.5.
This had to be a special win for Clayton, who grew up idolizing Tuff.In the CBR's press release he was quoted as saying:"Tuff was one of my biggest heroes growing up and to ride and win in front of him is pretty important to me." Clayton is the son of beloved CBR CEO and founder , Terry Williams; and he was lucky enough to grow up around his idol as Terry and Tuff have been close friends for years.I remember events where Terry would beam with pride  telling us about having gone to watch Clayton in high school events .
Clayton had reason to be extra proud of his wonderful poppa  earlier at the CBR Finals  when Terry became the first recipient of the Annual "Terry Williams Award of Excellence" awarded by co-CBR founder Joel Logan of Deer Valley Homes. This award will be given to a person who brings honor to the CBR during the year; and the recipient will receive a $1000 bonus. The board of directors will choose the recipient based on the following criteria:(1) His Strength of Leadership-when he says something others will follow without question (2) His uncompromising stamina and "never quit attitude" and (3) his solid as a rock integrity.
Terry sure does fit that  as does his CBR President Tuff Hedeman. Integrity and true grit  and leadership are definitely qualities both are imbued with.As he presented the award Joel Logan was quoted in the CBR's press release as having said:

"It was with great joy and personal pride that God has given me this opportunity to recognize the person that exemplifies the traits just mentioned." Says Joel Logan, "I can say he has truly meant the world to me. You don't know how many times his positive attitude, funny stories, and driven personality to win challenged me to become a better person."

And that really describes Terry. We have thought the world of him for years. He  is a great person and we wish him well.As Terry stood there holding his award in the picture  on the CBR site you could see him wiping the tears from his eyes.Terry has won PRCA Stock Contractor of The year many times but I kind of think this award is special to him.Congrats again terry.

Its good to see Zack Brown starting the year off  so well.Zack , a fan favorite who returned to bull riding last season scored 84.5 aboard Robertson's Mercury Rising in the first round of  the long go.  Zack added 91.5 to that in the short go(3rd in the round)  to finish fourth in the event with 176 points.Go Zack.
Danell Tipton rode Scotty Burruss' Georgia Sun for 80.5 while Steve Woolsey rode Robertson's Guitar Man for 82.Tate Stratton followed with a strong 86.5 ride aboard Robertson's Ranger and Justin Hermanson took the lead with a great 90 point ride  and his first $500 bonus aboard Harlan's Montigo Bay.Danny McDowell , Logan Knibbe and Corey Maier were blanked  by Robertson's Little Wicked,Kentucky Rain and Cheetah.
In the second round there were only 9 rides as the bulls had their way.Chad Castillo scored 84.5 aboard  Jesse Hill's Black Ape while Bonner Bolton looked great aboard Hill's Bad Bob.Justin Richard,Kolt Miller,Cody White, Justin Koon and Brian Curtis were all blanked by Hill's bulls but Clayton Williams found his spot aboard  Mucked Out for a great 89.5 ride.
Jarrod Craig rode Robbie Herrington's Buckshot for 89 while Zack Oakes scored 87.5 aboard Herrington's 87.5.McKennon Wimberley scored 87.5 aboard Herrington's Snowflake while Little Darnell blanked Tye Odden.Bryan Richardson made his great 90 point ride aboard Martinez Bulls' Coffee Bean next but Jay  Dunford was blanked by MB's Hawkeye. Howdy Cloud scored 85 aboard Martinez's Cha Ching and Kenny Westrope scored  80 on Black Gold. Martinez's Raptor blanked Corey Davis.Harlan Roberson's Foolish Man beat Cooper Kanngiesser while MB's Lil Wayne got the best of Lee Woolsey.Lufkin Ranch and Rodeo's Crooked Eddie and On The Edge blanked Pistol Robinson and Douglas Duncan. Meanwhile Smoothie's Bull Factory's(yes, that is the name) Smoothie's Wild blanked Tag Elliott. This was followed by Scotty Burruss' Charlie Brown and Border Patrol winning their matches against Lucas Dick and Ronny Kitchens.
In round three Burruss' bulls blanked Reese Cates, Layne McCasland,Clint Craig, Ardie Maier, and B J Schumacher. Clint Cassell scored 85 aboard Burruss' Eight Ball. I noticed some favorites have new owners as Cherokee Fiddler who is now with Alan Murphy. He  blanked Shawn Coleman and Murphy's Dire Straits  blanked Jerry Shepherd. The short go was action filled with great rides as  Chad Castillo scored 90 aboard LRR's Spanky.Chad was third up after both Danell Tipton bucked off Herrington's Denny Crane(Hmm,Robbie must be a Boston Legal fan-love that show) and Steve Woolsey  was blanked by Harlan Robertson's Spiderman.Zack"spur 'em in the neck" Brown made a great ride aboard Jesse Hill's Scarface for 91.5 .Watch out guys as Zack is back in form!He was followed by Howdy Cloud's   great 91 point ride  on Hill's Ikon. How thrilling can a round get? The crowd ate the action up.Then Robertson's mean Machine halted the momentum as he blanked Clint Cassell and Cooper blanked Tate Stratton. That was followed by Corey Davis' great ride aboard the Robertson /Wilson CBR/ PRCA World Champion bull  Biloxi Blues. Not many can accomplish this but when they do they can score like Corey. Great bull and he was raised by a great person that Tuff knows real well-his older brother World Champion Bullfighter Roach Hedeman. McKennon Wimberley scored 84 aboard Burruss' Pole Cat while Zack Oakes scored 85.5 aboard Burruss' Del Rio. One of my favorite bulls,LRR's Zorro blanked Bonner Bolton and Robertson's Big City did the same to Jarrod Craig. Then came Clayton Williams' great picture perfect ride aboard  Robertson's Texas .Clayton remained centered with his free arm in front to score the round and event winning rise of 92.5. Murphy' s' Cowboy Cut blanked Bryan Richards and it was down to the last rider as Clayton waited to see if his score would hold .Justin Hermanson had the crowd on the edges of their seats but his score of 90 aboard HR's White Chocolate was not enough to win.
I know that Terry had to be thrilled with the win and I am sure Tuff was also as he has watched Clayton grow up.The event gave the capacity crowd quite a show and I would sure be getting tickets for next year's event early if you want to get a seat. According to Tuff as quoted in the CBR's release:"This was one of the best events we have had in Bossier City.We really appreciate the Eldorado Hotel and Casino and all of our sponsors." Don't forget, this capacity crowd filled the place during adverse weather conditions. Bossier City area was hit hard by ice and sleet in the storms last week;and we actually canceled our plans  to drive there due to the weather.

NC's J B Mauney Wins Versus Invitational

J B Mauney Misses the CBR Finals But Wins The PBR's Madison Square Garden Event
by Sheila Totten
If it were not for the PBR's mandatory attendance at BFTS events policy J B Mauney would have been at the CBR's World Championship in Las Vegas this weekend where he had a good chance to take the title.Instead rather than risk a year's suspension from the PBR,Mauney  and other CBR top contenders as Colby Yates  attended the Versus Invitational where Mauney  was able to put four solid rides together  to pass event leader Adriano Moraes in the Championship round and take the event title. It was a smiling J B Mauney who won the first PBR Versus Invitational at Madison Square Garden; telling the fans he felt real good.
The format of the  rounds took their toll though on riders; and the lengthy travel seemed to effect some of the bulls too. Instead of a Friday,Saturday,Sunday event the Versus Invitational was a Saturday matinee followed by a Saturday evening performance and a Sunday performance. In the world of rodeo the same riders don't ride in the matinee and the evening performance. With bull riding this schedule puts extra stress on the riders; and there were some serious injuries which put some riders out for several months. With the autograph sessions ,photo shoots and other publicity  activities the riders have a really tight schedule and do not have sufficient  rest time. They are bull riders ,not supermen.
Mauney who was fifth in the first round and 9th in the second tied for 3/4 in the third round and was fourth in the Championship round;  then he went down in their record books as the first winner of the PBR's first ever event at Madison Square Garden; and he was thrilled.
Three time PBR World Champion Adriano Moraes was on top of the leader board after winning Round One with a great 90.75 point ride aboard Evil Forces. Although the crowd was thin for round one,the enthusiasm was  there in Adriano.he is out to make this year  his fourth PBR World Championship  which would make him the first rider to win back to back World titles..In interviews Adriano said so many people doubted him that he felt he needed to prove himself again this year. And by the way where is our Leah Garcia? Why was Tava Smiley there? Tava,if you remember was let go after the PBR and then OLN fired Brett Haber  from the PBR broadcasts.Tava was replaced with fan favorite Leah Garcia;and we all expected her to return. No one ever thought Smiley would ever be brought back. The fans are not happy; and as a Tava Smiley as an actress fan I would so much rather see her  back on General Hospital reprising her Chloe Morgan Character. After all,GH has resurrected many others from the dead who apparently died in plain view on the show .She's a fantastic actress but she does not fit in as a bull riding interviewer. And her "Randall Bernard"  utterance was as misplace das so many Haberesque remarks that its not funny anymore.Sorry Randy,if you are checking this out but you know me.I am going to say it like it is and not sugar coat anything  to please those in command. For the fans,Leah has other commitments  but is contracted to do quite a few PBR broadcasts.Watch for our favorite commentator to return in March.Maybe Versus  will pull Tava and let Rob Smets fill in for Leah. Versus needs to realize that Leah Garcia is the most sought after female rodeo/bull riding personality next to Pam Minick. The fans love Leah as much as they love their favorite riders like for example , Adriano. Her quick wit and personality endear her to all.
A returning Jared Farley finished the  first round just half a point behind Adriano with 90.25 aboard Encore. There were several riders who had been injured before the Finals who made their return but unfortunately the rides didn't get shown to the dismay of their fans.Once again I keep hearing fans complain about not enough rides and too much talk.
Chad Denton was third  with 89.25 on The Big Apple while Mike Lee scored 88.75  aboard Chain Reaction. Then came Mauney's fifth place  87 point ride on Copperhead Slinger. That was followed by Austin Meier's 6th place  ride for 86.75 aboard Cover Page.Greg Potter on Tobasco tied with Leandro Mattos on George's Pride for 7/8 with 86.25 while Colby Yates on  Chief tied with our hometown hero Cory Rasch on Wild one with 86 for 9/10.Cory finished last year hot and a healthy Cory is a challenge to all.
Only twenty of the 45 made the buzzer in round one.Guilherme Marchi was eleventh with 85.75 on Time Machine while Beau Hill was 12th aboard Cliff's Edge with 85.50. Tater Porter rode Outcast for 84.75 and was 13th while Dustin Hall scored 84.25 on Three Alarm and was 14th. Rocky McDonald was 15th with 84 on Hollow Point and Ednei Caminhas  was 16th with 83.25 on Dog Dip.Steven Shelley scored 82.75 on Pocket Change to finish 17th  in the round and Sevi Torturo scored 81.25 on Vertical Limit for 18th place.19th place went to Jason Bennett on Squirt Gun who did not have his usual trip.Jason scored 81 while the bull scored 39.50.Last place went to Allan Moraes who was out of shape  on Red One but scored 76.50.
The event began with a Saturday Matinee followed by a Saturday night performance and  that did not give riders much of a chance to unwind or relax between performances. The Saturday night crowd was a little better but still not what the fans expected to see. The start was pre-empted due to NBC programming so  we lost out on several rides.
It was Adriano Moraes again who thrilled the fans  with his 88.75 point round winning ride aboard Berger's Red Jacket.who spun into Adriano's hand with lots of drift.Adriano, in his round winner interview said"My back is sore as heck right now but its mind over body now." And Adriano is proving that.
There were only nineteen qualified rides in the round and quite a few rerides. A lot of the bulls whom we normally see having A-1 trips  were sadly lacking  in power and action. It used to be East Coast we normally saw the NE and SE stock contractors with some east Texas and Oklahoma bulls mixed in.This time we saw  more western bulls than eastern;and I think the travel may have been the cause of the  bad trips some had.
Rounding out the top ten in the round were: brian Canter in second with 87 points on a bull I just love,Repeat.Matt Bohon  finished third with his brother Ditto and 86.75. Mike Solomon has two adorable buckers in these two but more than that they always perform well.Just love those two. Mike Lee was fourth  in the round with 86 points on Born To Boogie while Brendon Clark on Cosmo and Kasey hayes on Rusty Rivets tied for 5/6 with 85.75. Meanwhile Wiley Petersen finished in 7th aboard Bowtech's Toy Tiger with85.25  and Cory Melton was 8th aboard Mossy Oak Break-Up for 85 points.J.B.Mauney scored 84.50 aboard Grandpa Joe and was ninth while Steven Shelley on Ralphie and Ross Coleman on El Lobo tied for 10/11 with 84.25.
I was not impressed with the crowd because many empty seats were visible. And the close-up camera work was terrible. You could not tell what the bull was doing as the cameraman focused in on the bull's head  and face.I was glad to see Craig Hummer back for round three as I prefer the VS.crew way over the NBC crew. Before round three Adriano was interviewed and he told the fans:"I could not focus before.I was too tired."He went on to admit he was everyone's big brother and would wear himself out before his ride  by pulling ropes and helping others. Now he sits in the stands to relax before rides.
Mike lee rode Rockin Robin in round three for 88.75 and the round win.Jason bennett was only .25 behind with 88.50 aboard Satan's Own.J.B.Mauney aboard repeat and Adriano Moraes aboard Rez Rock tied for 3/4 with 86.50.Tater Porter on Gold Bell Wine and Robson Palermo aboard Born To Boogie tied for 5/6 with 86.25. Mike White rode Youngblood  for 86 points and 7th place while Kasey Hayes rode Berger's Red Jacket for 85.75 and 8th place. Dustin Hall rode Louie Louie for 85.25 and 9th place while Wiley Petersen finished 10th with 85 points on Too Sharp.
There were only four qualified rides in the short go.Rocky McDonald won the round with a great 92 point ride aboard Sunshine who bucked around to the left and stumbled in the spin but Rocky managed to hold on and stay positioned.Steven Shelley was second in the round with 85 aboard Sports Machine  who didn't have a good out.Jason Bennett was third in the round  with 83 aboard Texas Jack who didn't have his normal trip either. The bull took on eleap out then spun to the right then reversed left and then jumpe dout of the spin and bucked straight. J.B.Mauney rode The Boogerman for 81.75 and fourth place in the round but won the event.he was the first rider to ride four  head. The bull  was yet another with a bad trip and bull score of only 40 as he   jumped out of the spin and bucked straight.
J B won the event and said "I feel good." Steven Shelley finished in second and Adriano was third followed by Mike Lee in fourth.
The schedule took its toll as several top riders were sidelined with injuries.Ross Coleman injured his left(free) arm shoulder and did not finish the event. He is set for an MRI. Jared Farley  dislocated his right shoulderand is having surgery on it.He is expected to be out four to six months. Our local hero Cory Rasch had more than the wind knocked out of him in round three when Copperhead Slinger got him on the first jump out of the chute. He may have hit Cory in the shoulder with a horn but Cory landed hard against the gate post  while Slinger rammed his head into Cory .Ty said he thought he just had the wind knocked out but I thought it was more than that..Cory was taken to a local hospital and ended up in their ICU for two days as he suffered internal abdominal bleeding. He  lacerated a kidney and broke the transverse process of  the tenth thoracic vertebra and bruised his spleen. He is to be out  anywhere from three to six months. Allan Moraes is out with a left groin strain and will have surgery on  his right knee .he will be out 6-8 months. Cody Whitney sustained a left wrist sprain but i scompeting . Adfd these newest injuries to the list of riders who were injured in either Hawaii or the Finals  including  th einjuries suffered by Chris Shivers who is out for 3- 6 months and L J Jenkins who is also out for 4-6 months. Everyone get well soon.

ASPCA's Mission Orange

I became familiar with the ASPCA as a child in Massachusetts where they had a major animal hospital and shelter in downtown Boston-the wonderful Angell Memorial Hospital. For animals it was almost comparable to  St Judes for Children as many lost causes and hopeless cases received treatment and miraculous cures.Run by the MSPCA chapter of the ASPCA   it was a grea tplace and it was rare tha tshelter animals got euthanized. Now ASPCA is on a mission to stop unneccesary animal euthanasia. Here is a letter from their  President and CEO about Mission Ornage.

To: Our ASPCA family and animal advocates everywhere
From: Ed Sayres, ASPCA President & CEO

It gives me great pleasure to tell you that ASPCA® Mission: OrangeTM is now officially underway. Launched today from our shelter in New York City, ASPCA Mission: Orange is a focused, measurable effort to create a country of humane communities, one community at a time, where animals receive the compassion and respect due to them as sentient beings—and where there isno more unnecessary euthanasia of adoptable animals simply because of a lack of resources or awareness.

With the collaboration of community and animal welfare leaders in “target communities” across the country, it is our hope that we will begin to effect immediate, measurable and sustainable change. During the first year of our campaign, ASPCA Mission: Orange will launch in Austin, TX, Gulfport/Biloxi, MS, Philadelphia, PA, and Tampa, FL. We will also continue to implement the principles behind ASPCA Mission: Orange in New York City.

ReCap of CBR Final's Second Long Go

CBR Finals -Day Two Results
by Sheila Totten

I decided to add this for fans of various riders who may be wondering how they did when they came up to bat against some of the best bucking bulls in the world at the CBR World Championship in Las Vegas. So here goes.
In round one Ronny Kitchens started it off with an 85 point ride aboard the Robertson/Wilson  bull Bad Whiskey. He didn't get the momentum going though as the next two Robertson  bulls blanked their riders.Mercury Rising beat Tag Elliott while Ranger dusted Cody White.PRCA 2004 World Champion Dustin Elliott tried to get it going again as he made a great ride aboard  Robertson's Dirty Sanchez for 88 to take the lead. Then it was the bulls again as Montigo Bay got the best of Cooper Kanngieeser and Calvin Chad Castillo.Hugo Pedrero kept his 71 points on Tennessee which was a good move as he made it into the short go on two head and ended up being one of only two riders to score on three head.Hugo finished third in the event and second in the average.Dave Samsel was unable to keep it going as he bucked off of Pappy Jack.
In round two the only qualified ride belonged to Ardie Maier aboard the BS bull Chicken Hawk for 89.5.R/W's White Diamond got Pistol Robinson and the Robertson/Wilson/Southwick bull Valentine bucked off Billy Robinson.Wes Bruce's Apache Warrior beat Derald Riche while his Raptor beat Sam Smith and Dire Straits beat JC Bean.Meanwhile the B/G bull Jarhead blanked D J Shields.
In round three Jessie Hill's bulls gave out one ride out of three.Ikon blanked Danny Ted McDowell and Shadow Water beat Bonner Bolton. Wesley Silcox scored 85 aboard Big Sexy.Have to like that name and it sure makes me think of ...Oops,best behave.Lufkin Ranch and Rodeo's  On The Edge gave up 86 points as Shawn Coleman made a strong ride and Bryan Richardson rode Spanky for a bonus as he scored 90.5 on a great ride.LRR's Crooked Eddie beat Travis Sellers.Glen Southwick's Spotted Dog  might have blanked Layne McCasland but GS's Desert Child gave up a strong 87.5 ride to Jarrod Craig.
In round four Justin Richard looked good aboard GS's Full Throttle for 87 but Rich Bumbaca's Hooker Jack blanked Zack Oakes as did his Auger to Howdy Cloud. Robbie Herrington's Cool Whip gave up an 83.5 ride to Justin Hermanson while Steve Woolsey got the momentum going again with a great bonus earning 90 point ride aboard David Bailey's  Tar Baby.Zeb Lanham carried it on making a great ride for 92 points aboard Bailey's great bull Super Cool. The American War heroes Organization had several bonus awards to happily give out to riders  tonight. And the last rider in the round was reigning PRCA World Champion BJ Schumacher who rode Bailey's Smokin Gun for 84.5.
The momentum continued in round five as nine riders made qualified rides.Tate Stratton rode Mike Johnson's Hijack for 88 while Jay Dunford must have been singing" Jose Cuervo ,You Are A Friend Of Mine" as he scored 87 on the MJ bull.Clayton Williams did his dad Terry proud as he scored 88.5 aboard MJ's Cat Daddy.Next up was average winner Kolt Miller who scored 86 aboard MJ's Legally Blonde-another great bull. Jerry Nelson's Tastes Like Fear  blanked Chad Couch but Marcus Michaelis scored 86.5 aboard Frontier's  The Rock. Meanwhile McKennon Wimberley scored 87 onboard Frontier's Whiskey Nights.Boy its easy to see how that name came about.Lots of those  on the various tours.Hey Jerry ,how about naming one Beer Bust? To go with Whiskey Nights! Jerry's Pistol Pete dusted Dusty Higgins  while Flash got the best of Jake Littlefield.Kenny Westrope  scored 87 aboard Woodstock while Danell Tipton scored 81 aboard Scott Burris's Coffee Bean and Ryan McConnell scored 79 aboard Frontier's Trapper. MB's  Cowtown blanked Tye Odden while Hawkeye  beat Logan Knibbe and Ranger blanked Brian Curtis. The  top of the order of finish in the long go was as follows:

Miller Wins Average As Sidelined Matt Austin Holds On To Win World

Its Official-Matt Austin Repeats As CBR World Champion While Kolt Miller Wins The Average.
by Sheila Totten
Ok everyone.I can now tell you that CBR 2005 World Champion Matt Austin is now officially the 2006 CBR World Champion making Matt the first rider to win two CBR World Titles and the first to win two back to back World Titles; and he did this without being able to even compete.Matt was so far ahead  in the standings that his lead was able to hold out till the end.Now hopefully he will recover early enough from his injuries and surgery to make it three in a row.Way to go ,Matt!
Kolt Miller surprised everyone with his come from behind finish to capture the average win.Kolt was #21 in the standings before the Finals; and finished out of the money on the first night although he made a strong ride for 86 points aboard Rich Bumbaca's Hasta Luego. He was able to go on and cover his second bull on Saturday, Mike Johnson's exciting Legally Blonde for 86 points; while once again finishing outside the top eight. It must have felt like  he would never make it but in the short go he made a great ride aboard Jess Hill's Wolf for 92 points., taking not only the round but the average.
Only two other riders  made qualified rides in the short go.Hugo Pedrero rode Harlan Robertson's  Mean Machine for 88.5 while Zeb Lanham rode the Bruce /Lane bull Wow Wow for 91.5.Robertson's Texas blanked Bryan Richardson while Wes Bruce's Cowboy Cut beat McKennon Wimberley.Bull of the Year,Robertson's Spiderman beat PRCA former World Champion Dustin Elliott while his Biloxi Blues got thy best of Steve Woolsey.Jess Hill's Scarface beat Tate Stratton and David Bailey's Red Man won his match with Wesley Silcox. Robertson's White Chocolate beat Clayton Williams and Jay Dunford fell victim to Glen Southwick's Jimmy Ray.The Berger/Stravie bull Detour was victor over Danell Tipton while Robertson's Big City beat Justin Hermanson. It was lightning striking three times over the weekend for Bonner Bolton as David Bailey's Lucky Strike won the rematch against Bolton and left Bonner wondering  how to get by this great bull. Last but not least my favorite in the short go,Lufkin Ranch and Rodeo's Zorro beat Ardie Maier.
When the dust settled Kolt Miller won $53,000 for the average plus his $500 bonus from the American War Heroes  Organization for his 90+ ride. Added to his season's total ,Miller jumped from #21 to #2 in the standings by winning $62,807-just $3,069 behind Matt Austin.
McKennon Wimberley who entered the finals in second place  finished third in the year's standings with $45,948; and Idaho's Zeb Lanham ended up 4th with $41,392.Hugo Pedrero was fifth with Bonner Bolton,Ronnie Kitchens,Wesley Silcox,JB Mauney and B J Schumacher rounding out the rest of the top ten. Mauney who was obligated to be in New York had been in fourth place  prior to the Finals and although not present ended the year  in 9th.
Congratulations to the Matt Austin for winning his second CBR World Championship and to Kolt Miller for winning the Average.Congratulations also to Stock Contractor of the Year Harlan Robertson and to his bull, Spiderman for being Bull of the year. And also congratulations to CBR CEO Terry Williams,CBR President Tuff Hedeman and to all the rest of the hard working members of the CBR for giving us all a very exciting season once again.

CBR World Championship-Bolton Faces Lucky Strike

CBR World Championship-Bonner Bolton Takes An Early  Event Lead
by Sheila Totten

The dust has settled in Las Vegas and the results of the CBR's World Championship Are now in the record books. The  winners of Bull of the year,Stock Contractor, etc have yet to be announced as tonight is the Awards Dinner. As soon as I have those names I will announce them. As for the name of the 2006 CBR World Champion, I wonder how many of you have already guessed it. Maybe I should prolong the suspense just a little longer but I did make the prediction!
Round one honors went to Bonner Bolton who scored 92 on a great ride aboard Jess Hill's Wolf. That gave
Bolton the chance to  try his luck in the $25,000 CLS Challenge against David Bailey's Lucky Strike who is rated as one of the best bucking bulls  in this country. When the bull actually fouled Bolton at the gate,David Bailey agreed to allow Bolton a second chance.Bailey's bull is just too good as he bucked off Bolton twice in a row.Just another great one from a great contractor.
In the first round Tate Stratton was the first rider to score with 87 points aboard Harlan Robertson's  White Diamond.Harlan's bulls blanked Pistol Robinson,Travis Sellers ,Zeb Lanaham, Billy Robinson and Ronny Kitchens.Jay Dunford was able to hang on for 84 points aboard Harlan's Blue Chip while Tag Elliott scored 85.5  aboard  his White Chocolate.
In round two of the long go we had a mix of great bulls blanking riders left and right. One of the picks of the night was Jarrod Craig aboard Harlan Robertson/Henry Wilson's Mercury rising. Mercury Rising won the match. With the new abbreviation system I am not sure of all the stock contractor names so I apologize to any who I just list by their initials. BL's Wow Wow blanked Tye Odden while Howdy Cloud was blanked by Wes Bruce's Cowboy Cut.Zack Oakes scored 84 on Cherokee Fiddler; one of my favorite Bruce bulls. The Berger/Stravie bull Detour  won the match with J C Bean  while Lufkin Ranch and Rodeo's Zorro, a great little bull, beat Ryan McConnell to the punch .I can just see Joe Wimberley's big grin as McKennon made a great ride aboard LRR's Spanky for 90 points.
In round three Clayton Williams rode  MB's Coffee Bean for 84 points while Ranger blanked Shawn Coleman.Danny Ted McDowell made a strong ride aboard Frontier Rodeo's Black Water for 86 points while PRCA  former World Champion Dustin Elliott made a great ride for 88 aboard Kevin Loudamy's Uncle Charlie; another great bull who is hard to get by on .Kevin's Cha Ching blanked Logan Knibbe while Justin Hermanson scored 77 on Predator.  MA's Frankie blanked Dusty Higgins  while Kolt Miller made a good ride aboard Rich Bumbaca's Hasta Luego for 84 points.Kolt had a great Finals but more on that later.
Danell Tipton led off round 4 aboard Frontier Rodeo's Woodstock with 87.5 points. Jerry sure brought some good bulls as always. His Pistol Pete blanked Derald Riche while Cooper Kanngiesser rode Dodgin' Calls for 85.5 .I love watching Jerry's Society's Child. That's one of my favorite Frontier bulls.Bet he isn't Layne McCasland's though as the bull gave Layne a no score just as Frontier's Smokey Mountain did the same for Kenny Westrope.Sam Smith scored 83.5 aboard FR's Moonshadow while Wesley Silcox made a great ride aboard Frontier's Flash for 89.5.
In round five Bryan Richardson rode David Bailey's Tar Baby for 88 and looked good.Meanwhile David Bailey's  Super Cool sent Ardie Maier off with out a score.DB's Red Man blanked Jesse Scholl while his Billionaire blanked Cody White.Glen Southwick's Jimmy Ray edged out Brian Curtis while LRR's Crooked Eddie blanked Justin Richard.Southwick's Desert Child got Dave Samsel off early while Robbie Herrington's Smokin Joe blanked Chad Castillo.Jess Hill's Scarface did the same to reigning PRCA World Champion B J Schumacher and his Scarface gave a big zero to Marcus Michaelis.Bad Bob beat Jake Littlefield but Bonner Bolton rode Jess Hill's Wolf for 92 and that was the go winning ride which sent Bolton to the CLS Challenge.Chad Couch rode Mike Johnson's  Little Flip for 79. Hugo Pedrero rode Johnson's Cat Daddy for 86.5 and Steve Woolsey rode his Legally Blonde for 85.5.
After the first long go the top eight riders were as follows:

BONNER BOLTON,Gardendale,TX 92 $10,500.00
MCKENNON WIMBERLY,Cool,TX 90 $7,500.00

CBR Pre-Event Festivities

Last year I had a great time at the CBR World Championship Finals in Jackson,MS; and I sure wish I could have made the trip to Las Vegas for this year's exciting Finals. As we drive to events  the weather kept us from getting out there.Snow  through the mountains just didn't seem like  the driving conditions  we wanted to attempt.
This year's pre-event festivities began nearly a week ago with autograph sessions and continued on Thursday night with the Findlay Toyota CBR Championship pre-event Calcutta to benefit the Freedom Fighters. With Cowboy Hall of Fame  announcer Bob Tallman acting as MC and J. D. Pass and stock contractor David Bailey doing the auctioneering, the 45 CBR riders  along with their first round draws were auctioned off to the crowd of fans, insiders and celebrities.Semen packages from some of the top bucking bulls in the business were coupled with  the riders and draws.
During the festive evening filled with good food and fun the total sales figure went over the $146,000 mark. The American War Heroes Organization which provides relief to the brave men and women of the military whooften pay the ultimate price for our freedom while suffering life  altering changes from injuries and hardships was the recipient of $50,000. Too many times these brave men and women seemed to get brushed aside. Now they have the American War heroes Organization there for them. Please support it  and never forget those who paid the ultimate price for our freedom-the men and women who gave their lives in service of our country.
One of the celebrities who bought up five lots was retired major league pitcher Mitch "Wild Thing"Williams. Seems he was the inspiration for the movie Major League-and here I thought retired catcher Duke Sims  might have been  the inspiration.Okay,so I am off when it comes to baseball.
Jarrod Craig and his draw of Harlan Robertson's Mercury Rising coupled with 10 straws from Terry Williams Y2 Millenium was the high seller of the night at $7800. The high volume buyer of the Calcutta was none other than Wes Bruce Bucking Bulls who paid over $27,000 for match-ups coupled with semen straws.
When the Calcutta ended the action shifted to the Black Jack Tournament in a roped off area of the South Point Casino floor.Ten tables were reserved for teams of bull riders and other players who raised $10,000 for the Bishop Gorman High School Development Fund.First place went to the team of Sam Smith,Tye Odden,Josh Carter,Zandy Cames and Clay Robertson who won a four day, three night trip and condo rental in Keystone,CO.Second place went to Justin Herman,Chuck Griffin,Danny McDowell,Marcus Michaelis and Dusty Higgins who won a Hog and Turkey Hunt donated by Wes Bruce. The last place(third) was won by Mary Pack,Steve Woolsey, Chuck Voght,Wesley Silcox and Shawn Frey who won 20X  Resistol hats and Championship Bull Riding Jackets.

Cowtown Spectacular

by Sheila Totten

The results are in for the Cowtown Spectacular which was held on New Year's Eve at the Cowtown Coliseum in Ft.Worth,Texas.I want to thank Amber Schmutz for sending the results to me and for filling  me  on the details of the event. If the name sounds familiar its because Amber used to do sound for the PBR and her husband is Randy Schmutz. , the in house announcer for the PBR. They have looksWEST Productions in Stephenville,TX.
The event had  60 3 year olds entered ,all ABBI registered; and because this was a futurity derby for the bulls it was a bring your own rider event. There were six judges and the average of the scores determined the ten winners. The $10,000 first prize went to # 363 Woodruff/XS Ranch(Chris Woodruff of Granville,TX. and Randy Schmutz,Stephenville,TX)Redchester, a son of  the great bull ,Winchester out of the Kish breeding program.Redchester scored 91.5 and rider Dave Samsel earned $1000 bonus for being on the winning bull although he bucked off.
Travis Briscoe was the top rider, scoring 87.5 on Devil's Deal while earning $2000. Travis faced the great Smokeless Wardance who was there as a Bounty Bull.Wardance won the match have to admit he has been one of my favorite bulls for the past few years.
I want to thank Lynda Hurst for taking Jerry Scott's bull to the event. Jerry who lives in KY has spent the past 21 years in a wheelchair after nearly losing his life  in a bucking chute in Houston when the bull reared up and went over backwards, crushing Jerry.Even after all this time Jerry still  never gives up;and three years ago even got on a mechanical bull. He's quite the person.
Jerry bought the bull he called Red Dobber from Lyndal a year ago August and sent him to Lyndal last summer for training.Lyndal changed the bull's name to Kentucky Headhunter  ; and has him coming along nicely.Thank you ,Lyndal for helping Jerry's dreams come true.
Kentucky Headhunter made a respectable finish in the derby at 25th place. He earned an averaged bull score of 83.His rider,Koben Puckett ,though ,came in second as he scored 86.5 and earned $1500.Cody Byars was third with 84 points on Spearfish and earned $1000 while Chad Castillo rode Black Jack for 83 points and $500. The irony- all the winning rides were on bulls who didn't make the top ten.
The order of finish for the bulls follows:
