Tate Stratton Wins The Lane Frost Challenge
It was College Station, TX's Tate Stratton who entered the record books as the winner of the Vernal,Utah event held June 2&3.He not only won $11,000,a $2500 Brad McClellan Dry Fork Saddle Co. custom saddle and a $2500 Fort Knox Gun Safe.Like Tuff's Ft Worth event this event is special to the cowboys as it is a tribute to the memory of Lane Frost. Always present at both events are Lanes wonderful parents Elsie and Clyde Frost. This year is special as their grandson Brian Frost is now a CBR rider.
Tate was fifth on the leader board going into the short go on Saturday night with his 88.5 ride aboard the Robertson / Wilson bull Calvin. He made a great ride on one of the Berger's great young bulls Red Jacket for 93 points to beat out his closest competitors Howdy Cloud ,Dustin Elliott and Dusty Herren.
According to the CBR and Eldon Monsen who was the event's co-promoter:"It was one of the best events we have had in Vernal, and we are already making plans for next year."06/2-3-Vernal,UT " I would take a guess that Eldon might be related to the CBR's Justin Monsen.
I hope none of the CBR staff  got any speeding tickets this year as they did last year on those mountain roads;and I sure hope Tuff  didn't have another deer to SUV collision as he did last year. I keep telling him if he's going to get a deer it needs to be with a Bow and Arrow or a gun!
Friday Night Long Go
In section one there were only two qualified rides .Riley Bagley rode R/W's Hillbilly Rock for 81 and Bradley Harris rode Jesse Hill's Icon for 88 to take an early lead.
In section two between the Jesse Hill,Caspar Baca and Nevada Berger bulls the cowboys were flying off in all directions. Being second in the CBR standings didn't help Ronnie Kitchens as Baca's Loverboy set him down early. Berger's Carmel Corn  made quick work of Edgard Oliveira but Jess Pride rode Jesse Hill's Red Ape for 76 points.
I am glad to see that some of our Indian Rodeo riders continue to ride in the CBR. I hope they will be at Lake Charles  so that I can interview them.
In the third section there were two qualified rides as more Berger ,R/W and Southwick bulls turned on the power.Gabe Benally rode Berger's Grey Goose for 83 while Streling Yancy rode R/W's Catfish for 76.Good going guys.
Section four
Glenn Southwick's Little Tiger had no respect for the Frost name as he sent Brian down early but Full Throttle gave up an 89 point ride to Buskin Wilson. Rich Bumbaca's Pepper Popper  bucked hard but was no match for  PRCA World Champion Dustin Elliott who scored 90. With only 7 qualified rides in the long go you know the contractors brought great bulls. Eight riders made it back on the draw. They were Streling Yancy,Pistol Robinson, Brian Frost,Jeff Hansen,Dustin Larsen,Tyler Taillon,Ryan Brown and Edgard Oliveira.
Oliveira scored 87 aboard Caspar Baca's Whatabout Me to win the short go. Jess Pride  scored 86 aboard Berger's Peacemaker  giving him 162 on two head and putting him on top of the leader board. Dustin Larsen scored 80.5 aboard JH's Sting and Pistol Robinson scored 69 on R/W's Gatlin Gun.
Saturday Night
Section one had four qualified rides with Danell Tipton scoring 76.5 aboard Baca's Firewater and Steve Woolsey scoring 78 aboard Baca's Dixie Chicken.PRCA World Champion Blue Stone scored 81 aboard Glenn Southwick's Zinger and Kyle Joslin  scored 87 aboard Southwick's Killer Bee to take an early lead in the round.
Section  two had two qualified rides. Idaho's Zeb Lanham scored 87 on GS' Holy Smoke to tie with Kyle Joslin and Danny Ted McDowell scored 85 aboard Nevada Berger's Grandpa Joe.
There  were four qualified rides in the third section with Dusty Herren taking the lead in the round with 89 points aboard R/W's Crimson Tide. Derald Riche was the third at 87 aboard Bumbaca's Auger while Jason Mattox scored 84.5 aboard Berger's Rusty Rivets and Jesse Schellhamer scored 82 on R/W's El Paso.
The fourth section had five qualified rides with the lead changing again as Howdy Cloud scored 92.5 aboard R/W's  Cigar Joe. Brian Curtis scored 85.5 aboard RB's Dippity Do and Tate Stratton scored 88.5 aboard R/W's Calvin. I watched Tate ride here in Franklin,TN with his broken wrist and he has real heart.PRCA World Champion Cody Hancock scored 83.5 aboard R/W's Hostage while Robey Condra scored 86 on R/W's Bad Wine.
Short Go
I don't have word on his injury but Blue Stone was unable to ride in the short go. Sonny Murphy replaced him. I was happily surprised to see Coyote  was at the event. Steve Woosley scored 88.5 aboard this great little bull and had 166.5 on two . He was third in the round .Jesse Schellhamer scored 84.5 aboard JH's Gung Ho to tie with Woosley for 5/6 in the average. Jason Mattox scored 86 aboard Hill's Sting and had 170.5 on two and was 4th in the average. Brian Curtis made a great ride aboard JH's Scarface for 91.5 points and had a total of 177 on two and finished second in the event. Zeb Lanham scored 89 aboard Baca's  Whatabout Me for 176 on two and third place in the average. Then came Tate Stratton's great 93 point ride  on Nevada Berger's Red Jacket. That is such a great bull. Dusty Herren bucked off of Berger's Dirty Harry while Howdy Cloud bucked off of  GS' Honky Tonk to give the title to Stratton.Jess pride's  162 from Friday night earned  the Henderson,TX cowboy 7th place in the average while Howdy Cloud finished eighth with his 92.5. The CBR will be off  until Lake Charles, Louisiana in August.
Injury Report
After reading Cicily Cross' Crossroads I learned that Clint Craig would be out of competition  until late June due to surgery for a wrist injury. He hopes to return for the PRCA's Reno Rodeo. D J Domangue is recovering from surgery for an identical wrist injury and hopes to return to action about the same time as Clint .Logan Knibbe suffered a head injury requiring a trip to the hospital  where he had staples put in his head to close the head wound he received when he was hit on the head and stepped on during the Crockett,TX PRCA rodeo. He also had some internal bruising. He had wanted to return for both Myrtle Springs and Vernal but was too sore so he will take a few more weeks off. Travis Sellers broke his right wrist(riding hand) during the long go at the Tulsa PRCA Xtreme Bulls but that didn't stop Travis who made a great ride in that short go for 91 on Mean Machine to finish third in the event. He then came here for the PRCA rodeo in Franklin,TN where he scored 83 points to come in second. I have to say they sure were stingy on the points there but it was great to have the PRCA back here in middle TN. I believe last summer's PRCA Xtreme Bulls  event (Bullnanza Nashville) was the reason the Franklin Rodeo committee opted to switch from the minor league(IPRA) to the majors. I hope we see more of this here and I also hope we will see a CBR event come here too.The fans would love it. Meanwhile Travis has decided to take a few weeks off to allow his wrist to heal without surgery.if this does not work then he will have to undergo the same surgery as Clint and DJ. I saw Shorty Gorham get tossed in the air and land on his neck and shoulder  when I watched the broadcast on ESPN of the same event. Shorty underwent surgery in Dallas for a severe shoulder injury and will be out for six weeks.
At the PRCA rodeo in Carthage,TX Cord McCoy  hit his free arm on the bull's head  and had surgery on may 26th.As its his free arm he does not contemplate being out long. Clayton Williams  who  finished third here in Franklin popped his  free arm shoulder out of the socket and took a few weeks off but returned  to ride at Vernal.
Thanks to Wes Bruce and Dan Goodale  the CBR has a new program that began in Gallup. Any rider who scores 90 or above  at any televised event receives a $500 bonus from American War Heroes.  This bonus money will count towards the CBR's World Championship.
Our heartfelt sympathy to Terry Williams on the loss of his beloved  great legendary bull Promise Land who got ill and died on may 10th. I loved that bull as much as I love my own.he had a personality and it was sweet.
One of these days I am going to get Cicily to duet with Teri Lann.Teri and Ray Clary tried to get Cicily to do that last year in Gallup but to no avail. Cicily would sing along in the background by herself every so often and their voices should blend nicely.Ray is true country and he can also write a great country song.
I hope to see everyone at Lake Charles.Even a hurricane won't keep me away .And don't forget to watch the event on The Outdoor Channel. The schedule can be found at www.cbrbull.com and when you go there be sure to read Crossroads.that's Cicly's monthly column and its always enjoyable.
