Corey "Montana" Davis Wins Round One At The CBR World Championships

CBR Finals-Round One
Corey "Montana" Davis Wins Round One

When I attended the NABA  Finals in Memphis ,TN it was a good preview of a sort for the CBR's World Finals as among the riders there were quite a few CBR Riders. I had seen Corey  Davis ride at CBR events I attended and also on their televised broadcasts  and  I was glad to see him Memphis along with Jody Newberry,Ronnie Kitchens,Willis Trosclair and others.
In round one of the Findley Toyota CBR World Championship Corey made a great ride aboard Mike Johnson's The Air Up There- a name that suits this  high jumping, high kicking bull like a glove! I have heard a lot of good comments on the bull from our local riders  who are familiar with him.If you stub your toe ,forget it .Otherwise he is  a great bull to draw with lots of timing and no dirty tricks. Davis was thrilled  with both his score and his ride as he had  many family members and friends and his pretty fiancee with her family and friends there to cheer him on.
Davis went on to the CLS  Match of Champions  where he faced a bull who has gone unridden in all circuits for three years,Cochise (owned by Tut Henry,Gonzales,LA). The bull was too much for Davis and he bucked off of him.
Corey is a young rider to watch. He has a future World Title in his  future. His round one win has moved him into second place in the standings. First place leader Pistol Robinson drew  a hard one to ride,Lyndal Hurst's super bull Full Throttle who won their match.
Corey edged out PRCA World Champion Wesley Silcox by 2 points as Silcox made a great ,picture perfect ride aboard Mike Johnson's  McCrazy for 91 points. There were 17 qualified rides in the round  with  several riders tied at 89.
Bryan Richardson scored 90 to tie for  third/ forth with Chad  Castillo. Richardson was aboard Talbert Land and Cattle's Icon while Castillo rode Scott Burruss' Brass Apache. Laden Ledbetter made a solid ride aboard Lufkin Ranch and Rodeo's Derringer for 89.5 and fifth place.Got to love that bull. He's Zorro's son! Jake Littlefield, Ardie Maier and Jarrod Craig tied for 6/7/8 with 89 points. Littlefield  rode  Greg Willingham/Fred Robinson's Wild Nights while Ardie Maier  rode Alan Murphy's Smokin Joe.Alan has been buying up some really good bulls and I expect him to be a contractor of the year contender. I was happy to meet him in Longview; and was very impressed by him.  A real down to earth nice guy.
The bulls really took charge in round one,but that is the norm when 4X World Champion Bull Rider and CBR President Tuff Hedeman puts together a pen of bulls. Of course,25 of these bulls were NBBA Classic Finalists.
Alan Murphy has another good bull in Border Patrol. Our local riders  trey and Tye Allen have bragged on that one.Cody Sundby rode him for 87.5 while Sonny Murphy rode  Bryce Cooper's Chipaway for 87. Steve Woolsey and Bronson Butcher  scored 85.5. Woolsey rode  Wes Bruce/Tino Martinez's  Apache Warrior while Bronson rode Billy Jones' Chrome Molly. Howdy Cloud rode  Bobby Richards' Ugly Water for 85 while Bonner Bolton rode  Wes Bruce/Tino Martinez's  Black Mamba for 84 and Layne McCasland rode Alan Murphy's Sports Book for 84.John Jacobs rode  Lyndal Hurst's Rehab for 82  and Clint Craig rode. Owen Washburn and the 5 Ladies Scottish Rights for 82.
