CBR President 4X World Champion Tuff Hedeman

Since I've been gone there have been many great changes at the CBR. If you have not been to their revamped site then please check it out.Their Intro is as my very British friend Angela would say"very smashing."I loved it.My only complaint is that the draws and results ar enot being kept current as they were for each event on their old site.

The change that has me excited is that for the very first time the CBR will have an event right here in Nashville,TN on June 10th.When I saw Tuff Hedeman and Wes Bruce at the CMA Music Fest this past summer I had a hint that in 2009 we would see more than a mechanical bull challenge at the Music Fest.This is great.The fans are going to love this.

I have to admit it was great to see Tuff,Wes,Cicily and some of the riders at the Music Fest.I sure miss all of them when I can't get to events.They were here as part of the Nashville based RFD-TV program at the Musicfest.

The CBR has a new show which airs on RFD-TV Sunday March 1st at 7:30PM EST called"CBR:Behind The Chutes".This also can be seenWednesdays at 5PM EST and Thursdays at 3AM EST.The show will highlight everyone involved from the cowboys through the stock contractors to the bullfighters while giving the fans an in depth view of what goes into bringing the CBR to network TV. I can't wait for the first show.

Several other changes have come up .As of March 3rd GAC (Great American Country)will exclusively air the actual event broadcasts on Tuesday nights at 9 PM EST ;Wednesday Mornings at 1 AM EST and Saturdays at 7 AM EST. This means that the CBR will be available to 36 million households on RFD-TV and over 55 million on GAC.

One of my favorite NFR commentators,Jeff Medders is the CBR's Broadcast Producer and part of the broadast team which now includes one of my all time favorites ,the great 8 X World Champion Bull Rider Don Gay.I just love his colorful comments. 4X World Champion Bull Rider and CBR President Tuff hedeman will be back doing what he loves. He will be very visible on the broadcasts as the Chute Boss on the arena floor and he will do his rider VS bull match-ups plus give additional commentary.

Also added to the broadcast crew is Hadley Barrett's co-host from RFD-TV's Beyond Rodeo, Susie Dobbs.Mahindra Tractors remains the official tractor of the CBR and will be the "Presenting" Sponsor of the 2009 tour.Ironically that happens to be a brand of tractor that we have been looking at for our little ranch.

In other news the CBR has announced some new bonus programs for riders and stock contractors. They are also bringing the CBR Cup back which has been on display at Billy Bob's for several years.Starting with the 2008 Finals the CBR World Champion will once again have his name placed on the CBR Cup.

Along with the cup,starting in the 2009 season riders will earn points based on their scores for a chance at winning a cash bonus and also win their place on The CBR Cup. The way it is explained is that a 91 point ride equals 91 points except during the World Finals when all points are doubled. With this new system the rider with the most points at the end of the year will be the next CBR World Champion and he will receive $100,000 as a bonus. The additional 14 top riders of the top 15 in the final Crown Royal Standings after World Championship will also earn bonus money starting at $55,000 for second place down to $1000 for 15Th place.

The CBR will also give a cash bonus of $5000 to the winner of Stock Contractor of The Year along with the usual Hy-O Silver Buckle; and do the same for Bucking Bull of the year.

The CBR is steadily growing and its going in the right direction.The riders,the bullfighters,barrel men and contract personnel,the bulls and the stock contractors are what its all about.Its the bull riding association with lots of heart and soul where riders want to come and ride and are not obligated to be at any number of events.

The 2009 Season began with The Beau Rivage Tuff Hedeman Mississippi Shootout in Biloxi ,MS and I am thrilled to say that Cody Whitney won that event. Cody rode King Clyde in the long go for 89 points and made a great ride in the short go aboard Hammertime for 95 to win the event with184.

The CBR has added a lot of events this year and presently has 18 scheduled. Their next event is The Casa Ford Tuff Hedeman West Texas Shootout in El Paso.Every year I intend to make it there and thought I would as it is my birthday but my riders ,my partners in our little arena are riding at the NABA Finals in South Haven MS and we have to be there for them.Four of us are celebrating our birthdays which are just a few days apart together down there.Maybe next year all of us will be at El Paso with the guys riding there.

The CBR will be all over the country this year with added events in Reno,NV;Nashville,TN;Lakeland ,FL;Fort Myers,FL;Hankinson,ND and a special event in May that is yet to be announced.

Ryan Dirteater Tops The Field In Dallas

I am proud to announce that the Cherokee Nation's Ryan Dirteater won the PBR's Dickie's Invitational in Dallas,Texas this past weekend catapaulting him to number three in the BFTS Standings.Ryan rode Cat Man Do in round one for 89 points and a tie for first and second in the round.He looked great aboard that bull and kept correcting his position with every jump. Round two and the short go will not be televised until tonight but Ryan came in third in round two with 87.75 points aboard Stiffler and he rode The Geetus in the short go for 83 points and seventh place. I take it the bull didn't have his normal trip as he only scored 41 while Kasey Hayes scored 90 in the short go aboard California Dreaming who had a bull score of 44.25. When the dust settled Ryan had scored259.75 aboard three bulls,earning 774.75 points and a whopping $49,244.oo in cash.

I interviewed Ryan when the PBR came to Nashville lastAugust and I was very impressed not only with his riding ability but his attitude and character. He was second to Justin Mcbride in the event and the nineteen year old was thrilled.This is a young gun who has a good chance at making World Champion soon;and I hope this win will win him some sponsors from among the Tribes along with business sponsorships. He is living his dream.

J.B.Mauney was second in the average with 256 points on three head ; which put him in first place in the BFTS standings.

I'm Back with some news tidbits

Our new additions at CWR Buckin' Bulls:#1 is a son of Dennis Morris' really rank bull#769;picture two is a two year old used in Junior Rodeo that Trey named Amos Moses who likes to kick high and twist .With him to the back is a rank heifer named Pebbles who is now out with the herd. The last picture is our 2+ rank bull Mo who resembles Mossy Oak Mudslinger.He got too rank for Junior Rodeo.

Eversince moving my Blog I have been so busy with our bulls at CWR Buckin' Bulls that I have not had a chance to write anything.I want to congratulate Guilherme Marchi on his victory at the PBR World finals .It was great seeing him win the World Championship.At the same time it was sad seeing the great World Champion Adriano Moraes retire.We all will miss him.Also retiring was two time World Champion Justin McBride who mlike his idol Ty Murray just decided to retire young.Like Ty Justin has had many injuries and I wish him the best. Ednei Caminhas was also set to retire but the former World Champion changed his mind and is competing this year.

Our Redneck Practice Pen is actually still going on during the winter though its weather permitting. We had planned to buck today but the ground is frozen so we cancelled. Steven Hagewood,one of our junior riders has come a long way and has the potential to become a star.He is the most improved junior rider here of 2008. Rusty Shattuck is our most improved Pro rider. We hope to find a place in one of the neighboring towns to move our operation to as Dickson County Codes will not allow anyone zoned Agricultural to even hold a regular weekly or monthly event unless they are rezoned commercial;and they won't rezone us because we are not on a major highway. What that means is that we cannot charge admission,sell concessions or have a jackpot.We are only allowed 4 events per year with the purchase of a permit and the rigamarole you go through to get a permit is ridiculous.You no longer can even have a hay ride without a permit detailing your route. Because we have a great group of riders and bullfighters who come here we will not quit.It means running at a total loss everytime but this is a great group and we won't let them down.Codes cannot interfer if we are in an incorporated town so we hope to move this.Once we do we will have at least monthly jackpot bull ridings if not more.And of course we will run our weekly practice pen.Till then the practice pen will continue right here at Cherokee Wolf Ranch in Cumberland Furnace.

Watch for my partners Tye and Trey Allen in the NABA Finals in SouthHaven,MS Febraury 7&8.They are really good riders and hopefully we will see them branch out and make it to some CBR events this year.Trey and Tye built and designed our small arena ; and run the practice pen.For Christmas my husband and I gave them 20% of our bull we raised Minnie Minerva's TN Twister and 20% of a new prospect we bought that is out of 4X World Champion Dennis Morris' big rank bucker #769.Since then we have partnered on two more bulls and a heifer with them that we just bought.Can't wait until the weather warms a little so we can try these bulls out.

Congratulations to Clayton Baethge on becoming the CBR's World Champion last night. Watch for the CBR now on GAC and RFD-TV.

Don't forget that the weekend of February 13th &14th is Milam and Parson's big event in Murray ,KY. You'll see bull riders and barrel racers from all over the country at this ;and some really top rank bulls as Brandon Gaspar's G-Unit and The Game unless they are scheduled at a PBR event.I am reallyhot about Brandon's bulls.He has some really great ones and if you are a rider try and make it to Milam and Parson's monthly buckle series in Buchanon,TN as you are certain to see some of Brandon's great pen of bulls up there with a lot of other rank bulls.

Looks like the PBR is changing many things this season.No longer will the fans see 45 top riders compete at every event.The PBR has trimmed its BFTS roster to 40 riders of whom the top 30 remain on tour with 5 coming up from the top of the Challenger Tour and five who are either under the Championship exemption of 5 weeks or returning from injuries with anywhere from 1-5 weeks left in their exemption.Look for some fan favorites as Colby Yates to be dropped down to the Challenger tour unless he makes a great ride today in Dallas .They also have been advancing whomever wins the San Antonio Discovery Tour event to the BFTS over and above riders on the CT top standings. They did the same last year with those who won at mesquite as an incentive to draw riders to that tour .I ,for one, feel this is totally unfair to the riders competing in the lower tiers who are winning events and in the top riders in the CT Standings. So far those they have brought up are way down in the standings.

Watch for an article on the CBR News.Their changes are really good news.Give you a hint.Fan favorite 8 X World Champion Bull rider Donnie Gay is now a regular member of their Broadcast crew.They have added a lot more events and a lot more activities for fans.

Congress Sides With The Cherokee Nation

 

I received a press release from the Cherokee Nation about  the struggle to maintain their rights to sovereignty which were being tested when California Congresswoman Diane Watson demanded that Congress punish the Cherokee for wanting to remove 300 non-Indians from their tribal rolls.Ms Watson ,who has never stood up for Indian rights in her own state of California where some tribes disenfranchised members who are Indian took this stand to try and force the Cherokee  to keep the 300 non-Indian  Black citizens  who were listed as Freedmen descendants as Cherokee citizens. MS Watson wanted Congress to cut of funding to The Cherokee Nation if they did not re-instate these 300 people. The Cherokee Nation has the rights of a sovereign nation and her actions  would be similar to demanding that Canada  make 300 people or keep 300 people they claim as non-citizens  as citizens. This is an issue for the Cherokee court system and not Congress.

I am glad that Congress has refused to honor MS Watson's demands.Several times in the past I tried to interview her but  she would not respond.She tried to have Congress stop federal funding for housing because of this but Congress voted to allow the funding to continue for the time being.Please read Principal Chief Chad Smith's statement outlining and explaining the issue.Thank you to all the members of Congress who have helped The Cherokee Nation.

NAHASDA Funds Continue Last week was eventful in our defense of the Cherokee Nation.  We have been defending our sovereign right to self-determination, defending our citizenship laws which removed non-Indian eligibility.  We were standing up to Congresswoman Diane Watson from California and others who have tried to attach language to laws that would forbid Cherokee Nation from receiving federal funds.  Our main messages about this issues has been that we are a sovereign Nation that has the right to decide citizenship laws and that any conflicts with our laws can and should be decided in a court of law, not by the federal government. The United States Senate and House of Representatives passed measures last Thursday and Saturday preserving Cherokee Nation’s federal funding for housing services (Native American Housing and Self-Determination Act reauthorization, NAHASDA).  The language of the measure stipulated that Cherokee Nation would receive these funds as long as a court order allowing citizenship for non-Indian Freedmen descendants remains in place throughout the tribal court case that will determine their eligibility for citizenship in the Cherokee Nation. I see the language in the bill as a sign that Congress recognizes the sovereignty and authority of tribal courts to settle internal disputes, which should be considered a victory for not only the Cherokee Nation but all tribes. It is unfortunate that Congress voted to single out an Indian tribe over a disagreement about the tribe’s internal citizenship criteria, but I consider it a good sign that they have decided that this is a matter that should be decided by the courts and not by politics.  There are several elected officials who helped us defend our tribal sovereignty: Senators Tom Coburn (R-Okla.), Byron Dorgan (D-N.D.) and Lisa Murkowski (D-Alaska), as well as Congressmen Dan Boren (D-Okla.), Melvin Watt (D-N.C.), Maxine Waters (D-Calif.), Barney Frank (D-Mass.), Dale Kildee (D-Mich.) and Steve Pearce (R-N.M.).  I thank them for their leadership and for proposing a solution that is not punitive to Cherokee citizens who need housing assistance. Here is some background information on this issue:  Currently, more than 300 non-Indian descendants of Freedmen are suing the Cherokee Nation in tribal district court over a constitutional amendment passed by Cherokee voters in March 2007 that restricted citizenship to people who have an Indian ancestor listed on the Cherokee Nation’s base roll. That amendment effectively ended a one-year period in which non-Indians were allowed to register as citizens based on a 2006 tribal court ruling. Those non-Indian Freedmen whose citizenship is in question have full citizenship rights, including access to social services and the right to vote, because of a May 2007 tribal court order that continues citizenship while the case is pending.   If you would like to read about the facts of the citizenship issue of non-Indian Freedmen, you can look it up online atwww.cherokeenationfacts.org and www.meetthecherokee.org. Guilherme Marchi PBR Classic

On Sept.25th the Los Angeles County Fair will play host to The Guilherme Marchi Classic presented by Jeffrey Scott Fine Magnetics.This event  is part of the PBR's Enterprise  tour  and will feature both stars of their BFTS and up and coming  riders from their Touring Pro division.   Money earned here will apply to the PBR's Challenger standings and also to their Qualifier  standings.

As all of our bullriding fans know,Guilherme Marchi  is in first place in the PBR standings   with a significant lead as they head towards their finals.Will this be Guilherme's year to take home that very special World Championship  buckle? After being second several years in a row many of us are hoping that this year  when the dust has settled in Las Vegas at the Thomas and Mack  it will be ,in fact, Guilherme Marchi who is triumphant.

Breaking News From The CBR

I have just received a press release from the CBR which states that The CBR has postponed the Tuff Hedeman Mississippi Shootout which was scheduled for this coming Friday,Sept.12th.in Biloxi,MS.The reason for this is the threat of Hurricane Ike hitting along the Gulf Coast. The event organizers vcurrently are working with the Mississippi Coast Coliseum  to reschedule the event.Like New Orleans,Biloxi is often hit bad when a Hurricane  approaches the area; and the CBR felt with the threat of Biloxi getting hit  tha tthere is no other decision then to postpone this event.I have kept a close eye on The Weather Channel about the storm and it might strengthen.Even if it doesn't the impact would be like Gustav and call for evacuation of Biloxi.

The CBR's next event will be the Budlight Bull Bash Tour 2008 in Longview ,TX on Sept. 20th.I went to that last year and it was a great event.A word to the wise-take a jacket along for although it might be 90 or more in the daytime by evening Longview seems to cool way down and this is an outdoor arena.

Don't forget to watch the CBR on RFD-TV on Wednesday nights.Check your local listings for the correct time in your own time zone. I'll have my DVR on recording it as we have our weekly practice pen every Wednesday and it has turned into  a 3 and a half hour event with about 200 spectators just for a practice pen. It cuts into my watching the CBR so I sure am grateful for my DVR.

Round One Of The PBR's Jack Daniel's Invitational At Nashville

The PBR returned to Nashville, TN at the Sommet Center on Friday, August 29th in a big way. Outside the Center on its Plaza they had live country music entertainment brought by Big Music, the label that Jewel is on. Big Music is also one of the Bull Team Competition owners. In the arena we did not really get the information on the teams as to which bull was on which team and what the team scores were last night .I hope they do update that tonight. Aside from that the action was fast and furious, Flint Rasmussen was great as usual and the PBR gave the fans a great time.

Prior to the event behind the chutes the PBR played host to the Believe In Tomorrow National Children’s Foundation and had several of the children in the program paint their handprints on several of the riders’ chaps.  The critically ill children got to meet one –on-one with some of the superstars of the PBR as World Champion Mike Lee and Wiley Petersen and others One boy that we met had been included because he recently survived a terrible car wreck which was life threatening to his family and himself His parents are still hospitalized at Vanderbilt in critical condition. Phillip Orange, his cousin Mary Nell Sparks and Mike Lee posed for a picture for us It was great seeing the PBR play host to these children and their families.

The PBR provided media with a great place to view the event and get great action shots. We had front row seats right by the chutes and we were just a few seats down from Tater Porter.

Prior to the start we were treated to the US Air force swearing in ceremony of 14 recruits. After that we were introduced to four airmen who had just recently returned from duty in Iraq. The Coppolla sisters from Big Music did a great rendition of The National Anthem and the pyrotechnics still made me jump even though I expected the blast!

The riders were introduced and I was surprised to see PRCA/CBR World Champion Matt Austin. Matt has been brought up on tour as an alternate and is determined to get back to the riding style he exhibited when he won the PRCA World Championship, their Xtreme Bull Championship, the College World Championship and the CBR World Championship all in one season. If he is allowed the time to chase all the titles I certainly can see Matt taking the PBR World Championship, the PRCA World and Xtreme Bulls Championships and the CBR World Title all in one season. He’s phenomenal.

It was great to see Brandon Gaspar here .I was happy they finally had him bring G-Unit to an event. I watched that bull in the ABA and he was always thrilling. Brandon is one of our local stock contractors and on Sept. 6th he and Chris Ashby are putting on a Bulls and barrels event in Paris, TN.The Bull Riding will be ABA sanctioned.

Vince Northrop was the first rider out aboard Bad Blood who was around to the right twice before tossing Vince off. Kolt Donaldson aboard Billionaire followed him and hit the dirt at 4.6 when the bull who was around to the right into Kolt’s hand got Kolt leaned back and off to the outside.

Jack Daniel’s invited several riders to participate after they had done well in one of the lower tier events. Cody Byars was one of those riders and he just might earn his way on tour. He was the first qualified ride scoring 86.50 aboard David Bailey’s Krispy Kreme who took two leaps out of the chute beforegoing around to the right into Cody’s hand. Cody remained centered, up on his rope and did some nice spurring. The bull scored 42.75.

Kasey Hayes returned after being out severalmonths due to a broken neck. He drew the Berger /Struve bull Live Wire who took one leap out then went around to the left into Kasey’s hand and Kasey showed he had returned in style as he spurred Live Wire while maintaining complete control. Kasey scored 86.50 to tie for the lead in the first section and the bull tied with Krispy Kreme at 82.75.

Lights Out was not enough bull for Cherokee rider Ryan Dirteater as Ryan scored 82 when the bull went around to the right away from his hand earning a low bull score of 40.50

Reese Cates looked good aboard John and Lacey Berger’s Chug-A-Lug as the bull went around to the right into Reese’s hand. Reese made a good, solid ride while the bull only scored 42.75.

I have always liked the bull Scaredy Cat and he earned 44.50 points as he dusted Dustin Hall quickly with wild leap around to the right.

In section two Red Rum faked right and left along the chutes just loping. Austin Meier was given a reride. Scott Schiffner is questionable for tonight as Gold Bell Wine knocked the Canadian out as the bull went around to the right into Scott’s hand and helicoptered Scott off. At one point his head made contact with the bull’s head and he also got stepped on. The report from Dr.Tandy Freeman was of a concussion with loss of conciousness. Scott was taken out on a backboard with a neck brace. Gold Bell Wine scored 44.25.

 

I was surprised that Ned Cross didn’t get a reride or lower score when Liquid Kitty  had a bad trip. The bull went around to the right alternating kick with no kick at all. Ned was in control and scored 81.25 while the bull score was 39.50. 

Clayton Williams looked like he had a ride in the books but the judges agreed that Clay was down at 7.9. Bond James Bond didn’t have his normal trip and only scored 32.75 as he faked left and right in a gentle lope.

The bulls had there way in section two and they sure were strong in section three. PRCA/CBRWorld Champion Matt Austin made his BFTS debut aboard Jeff Robinson/Anchor Bull Company’s Bugs Bunny. The bull took two leaps out and went around to the right pulling Matt forward that caused a slap at 4.4. Bugs scored 43.

Bryan Richardson scored 87 aboard Robinson/Larry The Cable Guy’s Gappy Joe who took one leap out then stumbled before going around to the left into Bryan’s hand with good kicking action in a really fast spin. Bryan was out of shape at the end of the ride and one of the judges called for a review but there was no slap.

Maybe some of the bulls didn’t like our TN dirt or water because there were a number of good bulls having bad trips and several re-rides. Hebert/Wilfong’s Misfit didn’t have much kick as he jumped forward then went around to the left into Beau Hill’s hand in a loping buck. Beau scored 81 but unlike Ned Beau was given a re-ride option.

The section ended with a strong 87.25 point ride from Pistol Robinson aboard Hebert/Fournier’s Cowboy Splash who took one leap out then went into a fast spin around to the right away from Pistol’s hand. Pistol stayed up on his rope, in complete control.

Wiley Petersen was given a reride when Hebert’s Start Me Up went around to the right really slow and actually stopped before continuing in a slow spin away from Wiley’s hand.

Justin McBride looked good aboard Hebert’s Handsome Jack who took two out then went around to the left away from Justin’s hand alternating kick and no kick. I was surprised that the bull scored 43.25 as I wouldnot have scored him over 41 but I am not an official judge. Justin scored 88 and took the lead.

The bulls took over again until Beau Hill got his re-ride aboard Bad Medicine, scoring 86 as the bull took two leaps out and went around to the left into Beau’s hand with lots of action whole Beau spurred him.

Colby Yates won his Enterprise Ride With The Best Challenge next as he scored 86.25 aboard Jerry Nelson’s Frontier Rodeo’s Three Alarm. Got to love Jerry’s deep pink flank ropes. Wish I could find some. Three Alarm took one leap out then was around to the right away from Colby’s hand then reversed left into it but bucked and spun slow to earn a bull score of 41.75.

After intermission Wiley Petersen rocked the Sommet Center with a great 91-point ride aboard Berger/Struve’s Say I Won’t Gunner. Wiley stayed up on his rope in perfect position with textbook free arm movement and good spur action with his outside foot as the bull went around to the left into Wiley’s hand with lots of kick and action. I really thought it was going to be a 92 or 93 but again I am not a judge.

Medicine Man had a bad trip with a 39.50 bull score as he took four leaps straight out before turning back left in a loping buck and flattened out still Robson Palermo did not get a re-ride and scored 75.

The crowd was hoping it would be a great night for retiring three time World Champion Adriano Moraes but it was not to be so as Harbinger took two powerful leaps out to the left with a belly Rolland caused Adriano to slap him. Our other retiring World Champion Ednei Caminhas was given a re-ride when The Iceman faked right and left sending Ednei out the back door. He must have fouled Ednei in the gate.

Sean Willingham looked great aboard Encore who took two long leaps out then went around to the left away from Sean’s hand with lots of action. Sean scored 88.25 and was second in the round. Renato Nunes scored 86.75 aboard Catie Done It who spun to the left into Renato’s hand after two long leaps forward. Kody Lostroh challenged the clock when his ride aboard The Breeze was called at 7.9 as the bull was around to the left into Kody’s hand then took a leap forward and reversed right with lots of high kicks. Kody’s score was 87.25 and I sure thought it would have been about an 89.

I had waited all night for the next ride, as I sure know the bull G-Unit.Yes, that’s his name not Gun It as was listed. Brandon Gaspar carried him to lots of ABA events last year, including our Finals and I just love watching this bull. Its about time he was brought up on the BFTS.Valderon de Oliveira rode G-Unit for 87.75 points as G went around to the left in a fast spin. I have to admit I am used to this bull getting his riders off early but we are dealing with PBR’s number 2 rider.

My Shoshone-Bannock friend Wiley Petersen won the round while Sean Willingham was second, Justin McBride was third, Valdiron de Oliveira was fourth and Kody Lostroh and Pistol Robinson tied for  5/6.

The Zantrex Grudge match followed the round.  L J Jenkins was aboard Lucky Strike and Clayton Williams attempted to ride Mr.Zantrex. Both riders bucked off quickly.

Before I report on good times as the CBR's Red Wilk Construction  event at huron,S.D. or the PBR's  Jack Daniel's Invitational I need to publish the following release from my friend and fellow NAJA writer Stephanie Schwartz.

I have been glued to The Weather Channel because of the threat Hurricane Gustav posed to The Houma Nation.I know that they suffered greatly from Hurricanes Rita and Katrina but received little help from FEMA.Their main source of income is shrimping and fishing and after the storms three years ago they were hit from two fronts. Many had lost not just their homes but their boats, their livelihood.Because of the storms those who still had  boats  were still crippled in their business because of the way the storms had affected the fishing and shrimping.Once again the Houma  Nation  is in danger.Please read the following and if you can please help.

As if the mass devastation of Katrina was not enough, it now appears that Hurricane Gustav will go right over the Houma Nation lands in Louisiana and the Houma will lose what little they had left.  This plea was sent out on August 31 by the Houma Nation….

This Relief Fund was created  in the wake of hurricanes Katrina and Rita, which helped thousands of tribal members return home and re-build their communities. Even though it is unpredictable on what level of impact hurricane Gustav will have, we are looking at reports from television news stations that hurricane Gustav could hit New Orleans with some mapping evidence that appears it could impact the region west of New Orleans. If this is so, people must know that the communities of the Houma Nation are locatedwest of New Orleans, in the bayou coastal area of Louisiana. It's difficult to imagine that on the third anniversary of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, we are threatened with the possibility of being in the same position that we were three years ago. But please be assured we have learned many lessons, and we are better prepared than we were then. We are all keeping a watchful eye on Gustav and are aware of the impact he could have on our communities. We would urge each and everyone of you in the threat zone to evacuate if you are able to on your own or contact your local officials immediately if you need assistance. We have reached out and are coordinating with the local offices of emergency preparedness in all of our communities to ensure that they are aware of your needs. We are four days from expected landfall and realize that Hurricane Gustav's track can change many times.

The CBR Heads to Huron,South Dakota

The CBR will be in Huron,S.D. for the annual Red Wilk Construction Bull Bash at the South Dakota State Fair on Wednesday night August 27th and Thursday night  August 28. This is their fourth year  in Huron where their event will kick off the State Fair.

Thursday night will be the CBR's  "Tough Enough To Wear Pink "night  in support of the fight against Breast Cancer .This is a great cause  and I hope everyone  attends . All proceeds from this will benefit  the "Think Pink For Breast Health Organization." At 6:30 there will be a meet and greet for all cancer survivors with 4X World Champion and CBR President Tuff Hedeman and the CBR  riders at the SD State fair Grandstand.Having lost  women I know to this dread disease and also having known others who ,happily, survived I urge everyone who can get out to Huron to attend the CBR event.

The two night event will be seen on RFD-TV,hosted by Tuff Hedeman. Fans  will see 40 riders competing there including 2007 PRCA World Champion Wesley Silcox, CBR?PRCA  World Champion Matt Austin,current CBR standings leader Cooper Kanngiesser,Jesse Bail, Artie Maier,Brian Curtis,Steve Woolsey,Mike Moore,Howdy Cloud,Logan Knibbe,Dave Samsel, Chance Smart,J.W. Harris,Danell tipton,Jarrod Ford and  many others.

I wish I could get out there but we have our own practice pen here every Wednesday so  I have to be here to keep my bulls and my riders in line.

The PBR Heads To Nashville,TN

Make sure you get your tickets now for the PBR's Jack Daniels Invitational to be held at the Sommet Center in Nashville,TN on August 29th and 30th. Tickets are on sale both online and through the Sommet Center's Box Office.

Remember, this is your last chance to see the great  3X  PBR World Champion Adriano Moraes  ride here in Nashville.Adriano and PBR World Champion Ednei Caminhas are both retiring after  the PBR's World Championships  this year.I urge all of their fans to come and pay tribute to these wonderful men.They are both great World Champions and great family men. Although I do not know Adriano's plans as yet(I hope to interview my friend this coming weekend) I do know that Ednei is training and showing horses in NRHA.No ,that has nothing to do with auto racing! Its the National reining Horse Association; and Ednei  is one of the best trainers and exhibitors.

The PBR has a lot in store for the fans as they open the doors early  at the Sommet Center on Friday,August 29th at 6:30 so that the fans can visit the many vendor booths in the concourse where there will be contests,promotions and lots of great souvenirs.On Saturday the 30th the concourse will be opened at 5:20 - 7:50 PM. Prior to that you can visit The Fan Zone on the corner of 5th and Broadway for a meet and greet at  3:30 PM.

As always there will be autograph signing after the event on the arena floor at 10:30.You can meet your favorite riders and even get a chance to take a picture or two.

Friday's after event party will be Nightclub PBR from 10:00PM till 1:30 PM at the Sheraton Nashville Downtown(623 Union Street) presented by Copenhagen Bull riding with activiteis from Las Vegas and Wrangler which include Las Vegas Poker tables where you can enter a drawing to win tickets to the PBR World Finals sponsored by Las Vegas.There will also be Wrangler video replays and PBR trivia contests for prizes.Admission is free but you must be 18 or older.

Maybe they could set up something in Clarksville also as that is where PBR riders Cory and Evan Rasch lived until they moved to my neck of the woods here in Cumberland Furnace which is just down the road from Clarksville. Cory and Evan have not made it back onto the BFTS tour as yet but I expect to see them back if not  after the next cut then early in the 2009 season.They are talented riders and great guys.

Valdiron de Oliveira Wins Second BFTS Title Of 2008

The PBR's one day event in San Antonio,TX was a little different from normal as they instituted "the draft" at this event. Personally,I don't see it making the riders ride any better nor do any better. I have never been a fan of the draft and from people I know who have been at events I have heard that  they were bored during  the actual draft picks. I can't see the purpose of it as if you claim you have the best riders and the best bulls why do you have to keep looking for ways to enhance the performance. I guess the new owners  have yet to learn that bull riding fans come to see bull riding period. What will attract new fans is simply the excitement engendered by the action of the event.Oh well,what do I know?After all I have only been around rodeo and bull riding most of my life and have reported on it for over ten years .

As the event began it was all bulls as Brian Herman ,Jared Farley, Robson Palermo bucked off of their bulls. Travis Brisco looked good as he rode Grey Dog for 89.25 as the bull went around to the left bottom  into his hand with lots of kick and twist getting Travis out of shape at the end of the ride when he nearly lost his feet.

Renato Nunes and Clayton Williams weren't so fortunate as they both hit the dust early. Rocky McDonald looked like he was in pain after he rode Sharp Shooter for 86 points when the bull went to the right into his hand.

McKennon Wimberley bucked off of Sharp Dressed Kid but Mike Lee made a good ride aboard Smiley who went around to the left into Mike's hand but nearly stopped  and went flat.Mike scored 87 which might have been a little high as Smiley didn't have the best trip.

Nick Landreneau rode The Rookie for 87.25 as the bull went around to the left and then jumped out of the spin.Ednei Caminhas  followed after two more riders bucked off with a good ride aboard Full Throttle.The bull went around to the left away from Ednei's hand  with good kicking action and Ednei was loose  as he rode him jump for jump,spurring.Ednei sure looked like the World Champion he is.

It was good to see Dan Henricks back but Skat Jacket got the best of him.Last time I saw Dan was in the CBR.

World's current  number one Guilherme Marchi rode Devil Dog for 87.50 as the bull went around to the right. he was followed by Sean Willingham aboard Spotted Frog who had good timing as he went around to the left away from Sean's hand.Sean scored 83.75.

Ross Coleman was awarded a re ride as Political Weapon just loped along the chutes while belly kicking. Unfortunately his re ride bull El Gato was power packed and bucked Ross off right out of the chute which is very unusual for Ross. Ross is one of the best.

Wiley Petersen rode Harlan Robertson's Black Mamba   for 88 points as the bull went around to the right away from Wiley's hand after taking two big leaps out of the chute.Wiley stayed centered in perfect position.

The rides were few and far in between  and the excuses  for so few riders making qualified rides on a draft event sounded inanae.When are they going to learn that the fans  are tired of excuses ? Ned Cross made a great ride aboard Cool Whip for 88.75 as the bull went around to the left into his hand then reversed right away but Ned handled it  and remained in perfect position while spurring  the bull who was kicking high. As good as the bull bucked I would have thought Ned deserved at least  an 89.75 to a 90.

Lufkin Ranch and Rodeo's Derringer showed that he sure can buck like his daddy Zorro as he had Cord McCoy off early. Derringer took two leaps out with rear and drop then faked left and went around to the right with high kicks like his daddy. I am really hot on this bull. It seems as if most of Zorro's offspring are turning out great.Congrats to Chuck Griffith.

After Ned's ride there were 7 buck-offs in a row. The J B Mauney rode Wild Life for 90 as the bull took two leaps in place then faked left and went around to the right away from JB's hand.

Austin Meier scored 86.50 as his bull took two leaps forward then went around to the left into Austin's hand with drift.

Valdiron de Oliveira rode Mastermind as the bull made a real fast spin around to the leftaway from his hand.The ride looked great but the score was only 86.50 and the fans weren't happy.

Three riders got called back to the short go as there were only 12 qualified rides in the first round.Of the three Bryan Richardson and Dustin Hall both bucked  off while Jared Farley  rode Black Gold who went around to the left  into his hand with a lot of speed and action.He scored 89 which was a little stingy.

Sean Willingham became the first rider to ride two as he scored 87.50 on Bonafide who was around to the left away from Sean's hand,giving him the lead with 171.75.

Valdiron rode Lightning McQueen whom he chose in the draft  for 89.50 and he took over the lead with 176 on two.The bull was around to the right into Valdiron's hand  and Valdiron spurred him well.

Zorro had his usual trip as he bucked  Nick Landreneau off .Just love that bull!

Guilherme Marchi lucked out as Buckeye nearly had him off but turned back and picked him up.The bull  took three leaps out then bucked straight before turning back to the right.He had lots of travel and his leaps had all fours off the ground  but Guilherme only scored 87.25 which gave him 174.25  on two.The fans were upset but  the bull took too long before going around to the right and  Guilherme was out of shape more than once.

Lil' Slim had a really bad trip with Ednei Caminhas as the took two leaps out  made one turn left then jumped out of it and just ran. Looks like a broke bull. Maybe he'll make a barrel racer ! Ednei's re ride was Medicine Man who was around to the left away from Ednei's hand.Ednei slapped at 6.1.

The win went to Valdiron de Oliveira  and was his second win of the season. Adriano Moraes  did the translating for Valdiron as Leah Garcia interviewed  them.

Stealing The Sacred Black Hills

Here we are in 2008 and once again through fakery and manipulation  they are trying to steal the Sacred Black Hills  from my Lakota brethren. Just as  centiries ago when they fooled leaders and elders with worthless treaties again here comes  the whiteman and the government to try again to take the sacred Indian land for a handful of beeds. Please read the  article that was forwarded to me .My heart is sick over this.

Mission, SD (Rosebud Reservation)    ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !   NOTICE ! ! ! ! ! ! !


Today May 22, 2008 between 1-3p.m. CST at the Harold Jones Hall on the Episcopalian Church grounds in Mission SD on the Rosebud Reservation a meeting was held  by attorney Douglas R. Kettering to push the sale of the Black Hills.  People were encouraged to sign Contingency Fee Agreements that had as a header "Greater Sioux Nations Oyate, a not for profit corporation" (to add legitimacy to an illegitimate situation) and pay $20 per agreement to the Law firm with additional hourly fees forthwith.  Edna Guereu fromerly of Denver and currently of Rosebud reservation was encouraging duped elders and anyone who would listen to sign Contingency Fee Agreements along with power of attorney statements, using Minnesota statutes.


Pass the word around because apparently most people are unaware of this with the exception of hang around the forts who are more than eager to sign in the hopes of making a meager $12,000, which will not last one day in a casino and is a pittance compared to both the spiritual and monetary value of this land,  while  Kettering stands to make millions if he is succesful, and vast amounts of money win or lose.

Kettering plans to have a meeting at Prairie Wind Casino on the Pine Ridge Reservation, much like the one he held in Early May in Sioux City Iowa, and now today  in Mission.  There is no scheduled time as of yet, however this sneaky rat is doing his best to only expose his money grubbing, land stealing plan to non Traditionals because he thinks in that way he can slither through the back door.

This only proves that we do still own  the Black Hills and that the US govt is scared and is sending slick slimeballs like Kettering (not Ketterling) to do his dirty work.  It seems Kettering is teaming up with the Law firm of Mohrman and Kaardal, P.A. the law office (612-341-1074) that is trying to make money off of the Shakopee Claim of the Mdewakanton Dakota Oyate litigation (Minnesota/ Prairie Island ) (http://www.mklaw.com/mdewakanton.htm)

American Indians And Skiing

When we think of skiers we think of Austrians ,Swiss and Swedish stars  but so few who follow  skiing  know that many of our North American skiing stars are Native American.How many have known that the Olympian  Billy Kidd is Abenaki. I remember as a child meeting him in Boston at Jordan Marsh where he was signing autographs and I knew right off that he was American Indian  just like me. I remember grinning from ear to ear about that.

 Another Olympian and World Class Champion skier is Idaho's Picabo Street  whose name means Shining Waters  There is Ross Anderson( Cheyenne, 2005 Bronze Medalist in World Ski Speed Championships), Stew Young(Tulalip,World Cup Veteran Speed Skier),.Gene  Tagaban(Tlinkit-Cherokee, X-treme skier) and Ron Alred(Telluride's Native Ski Pioneer). Add to this Olympian  Suzy "Chapstick" Chaffee who has been very instrumental in developing ski programs for native youth and who now co-chairs Native Voices Foundation.

Billy Kidd is the captain of the Native American Olympic Ski Team.Yes,everyone,we now have our own ski team! I am really thrilled about this.Kidd and  Suzy Chaffee are working with Native American youth through NVF.They are coaching them and assisting them  with opportunities to compete in the Olympics.

Currently two of the youth they are working with in Steamboat Springs,Co . are 6 year old Delaney Tyon who is Lakota from Pine Ridge. and 14 year old Mariah Cooper  who is Lac Court Oreille from Wisconsin.

Delaney ,who just won the gold at  Nastar's National Ski Championships said he was able to win because of the help he received from so many which included his Grandpa Lou, Derren Derosier(director of Terry Peaks Ski School); and by observing others on the slopes. Delaney's mother Misty found NVF through www.Snow-Riders.Org after Delaney had been hailed by Rapid City TV for skiing like a pro at his young age.

Billy Kidd is very proud of his young protege who is the fastest 6 year old on skis.Kidd even found jobs for Delaney's grandparents to help them while he coaches Delaney. Kidd calls both Delaney and Mariah a joy to work with while being good students and just all around great kids.

Mariah has "prayer signed" at two Wisconsin Governor's events; and after Delaney's victory Mariah honored him with a ceremony. Mariah's love of skiing was born after Billy Kidd and Suzy Chaffee were able to  persuade ski industry leaders  to donate 60 pair of skis for Indian youth in Wisconsin which enabled them to compete in the 2003 Birkebeiner X-Country Race. Mariah placed second in her age group in 2007.

Suzy and Billy  have worked hard not just to obtain donations as these skis  but as coaches for these Native American youth ;and also as lodging and job locators for their families. Mariah credits them for making it possible for her parents , Dale and Nancy, and herself to get to the 2010 Vancouver Olympics. Mariah also runs track and will compete in September's North American Indigenous Games in Vancouver. She has been voted to represent the voice of Indian youth on the NVF board. NVF is a Colorado based non-profit  partnership of U.S. Tribal Leaders,Elders and Olympians  dedicated to Croat unity through sports and education while  helping to heal Mother Earth. Making It In The CBR-Spud Jones

Spud Jones-Living His Dream

I was very impressed when I met Spud Jones at the CBR  event in Longview ,TX this past fall.  He was a pleasure to interview; and I was really glad that Teri Lann and I got the chance to meet him.Teri got some good pictures of him during the interview and during the event.Spud can really ride. He stays centered and has picture perfect leg and free arm movement even when he draws a small bull.Spud is one tall cowboy.

Spud who is from Tohatchi,NM  told me he began riding  at the tender age of three( mutton bustin ) and he went on to compete  in Indian Junior Rodeo. He graduated from mutton bustin to steers  and then to bulls  and broncs.He became an all around cowboy and he added calf roping and team roping to his  events and like the great Arby Little Soldier he excels at all. Spud is a Navajo Nation Champion,AIRCA World Champion and 2007 IIFR World Champion Bull Rider.

Spud went on to tell me that he made it to the 2005 National High School Finals Rodeo in Gillette,Wyoming. I had hoped to see Spud at the 2006 NHSFR in 2006 but neither he nor I made it to Springfield ,Ill.Spud  who was the AIRCA 2006 All Around Champion had a broken leg and I had bulls bucking at Finals in KY.

I asked Spud how he stayed centered and focused  he told me"Always go after your dream." That is his method . He also said "I'm living my dream now .I am making it to the CBR  Finals in Las Vegas.He had the biggest smile on his face . Spud had won the CBR event in Window Rock,AZ which was held in conjunction with the Navajo Nation Fair and that qualified Spud for the Finals . 

When I asked about goals there was of course the wish to not just make it to the CBR Finals but to become a CBR World Champion.He also wants to qualify for the NFR.as since he turned 18 Spud has been in the PRCA. I can see Spud not just as a Word Champion bull rider in both the CBR and PRCA, but also as  a World Champion All Around Cowboy.

Spud's role models in life are his mother and father.You could see the devotion for family in his eyes as he spoke about that. As far as bull riding idols and all around cowboys he said  his idols are Denny Flynn, Gary Toole,Marty Staneart and of course Tuff Hedeman.His advice to American Indian youth:"Keep trying. Keep going after your goal.That's what you got to do." When I asked him "Hold on till the end?" He grinned and said yes. We both agreed that  today's Indian youth on troubled reservations need to find a dream and go for it.Once again Spud said:"Never give up."

I am not alone in seeing Spud as a future World Champion.4X World Champion and CBR President Tuff Hedeman is really high on Spud and has even called himself Spud's numb one fan  during a recent CBR broadcast on RFD-TV.I guess Tuff and I will have to go round  and round for that title!

He rode Locomotion, the toughest bull in the draw during the Final round to edge out Kanin Asay and Tyler  Johnston. Congratulations to Spud on his first  PRCA event title and also to other Indian riders who are making good inroads into the PRCA.  including PRCA #22  Bronc Rider Rollie Wilson(Indian World Champion)PRCA # 13 Team Roper  Derrick Begay and #39 Bull Rider Justin Gopher.

Cooper Kanngeisser Wins 31st Annual George Paul Memorial Bull Ride

Cooper Kanngiesser Wins The 31st Annual George Paul Memorial Bull Riding While Taking The Lead In The CBR’s 2008 Standings

 The George Paul Memorial Bull Riding is the oldest stand-alone bull riding event. This year the prestigious event became a part of the CBR’s 2008 season and played to standing room only crowds this past weekend. The best bulls challenged the best riders from the CBR and the PRCA; and when the dust had settled it was Zenda, KS’ Cooper Kanngiesser who stood victorious.

Records were made as during the two day event there were 15 rides which scored 90 points or above. Five of those came in the short go and they were the only qualified rides in it. That had to have kept the fans roaring.

Trent Cormier of Houma, LA won the first round with 93.5 on Lufkin Ranch and Rodeo’s Maverick who is one of Zorro’s sons. He had to pass up his chance at the Bounty Bull Walk The Line (Bad Company) due to a minor but aggravating injury.

Super Dave Samsel (Haslet, TX) got the nod to face the Bodacious grandson because of his second place finish in the round. He rode Rich Bumbaca’s Hasta Luego for 93 points in round one. Dave who at age 37 is one of the oldest riders on tour has really seemed to blossom during the past two years as he rides both CBR and PRCA.While other riders seem to be slowing down Dave only gets better with time. Unfortunately for him Walk This Way also gets better with each out and he bucked Dave off right out of the chute with his power, rear and drop. Dave gave the crowd that great Samsel grin and told them he was still happy to be a part of this great event.

Clint Craig of Mena, AR was third in the round with 92.5 aboard Bumbaca’s Auger while CBR 2007 World Champion Bonner Bolton was fourth in the round with 92 points aboard Hurst/Dyess& Garrett’s Carney Man. Danny McDowell was fifth with 90 points aboard Alan Murphy’s Coffee Bean.

Corey Davis rode Alan Murphy’s Smokin Joe for 82.5 and Cody White rode Murphy’s Border Patrol for 81.5 in the first section.

In the second section of the round it was Cooper Kanngiesser with 86.5 aboard Bad Company’s Born To Boogie and PRCA World Champion Wesley Silcox aboard Benny Cude’s Mama’s Boy for 90.

Luke Haught rode Carl Wilburn’s Chuckar for 83 while Seth Reynolds rode Scott Burruss’ Mojo for 85. Steve Woolsey aboard Lyndal Hurst’s Chino with 86.5 followed him

IIRA World Champion Bull Rider and Navajo Nation World Champion Spud Jones made a good ride aboard Mike Johnson’s McCrazy for 89.5. CBR President 4X World Champion Tuff Hedeman is really proud of Spud and sees a future World Champion of the CBR in him.

Travis Sellers rode Johnson’s Hood Figure for 89 to end the round.

  Bonner Bolton rode Bad Company’s Funcky Cole Medina for 86.5 in the second round giving him the lead with178.5. That was short lived as Spud Jones took it over with yet another 89.5 ride. This time he rode Bad Company’s Pretty Vegas and had 179 on two head. Luke Haught rode Born To Boogie for 86 and he had two under his belt for 169.

Logan Knibbe made a great ride aboard Johnson’s Mighty Dirty for 92   while two time CBR World Champion Matt Austin rode Alan Murphy’s Coffee Bean for 90.5. Then it was Cooper Kanngiesser aboard Lufkin Ranch and Rodeo’s Dirty Demon for 87 to give Cooper 173.5 on two head.

Jay Morrow rode LRR’s Top Gun for 85.5 for a solid ride. The Friday Wright scored 89 aboard Glen Southwick’s Red Eye for another thrilling ride. Trent Cormier added to his first round winning score with 86 points aboard Jesse Hill’s parachute to give him a total of 179.5 and he took over the lead.

Steve Woolsey scored 87 on Rosin’s B20 and had 173.5 on two head. Dave Samsel added to his score with another solid ride aboard Billy Jones’ Doc Holiday for 87.5.that gave Dave the lead with 180.5 on two.

Luke Kelly rode Murphy’s Hookin Bull for 88.5 while Bronson Butcher was great upon Murphy’s Mr. Incredible for 91.

The last two qualified rides of the round were Corey Davis aboard Scott Burruss’ Looney Toon for 85.5 and Douglas Duncan aboard Lyndal Hurst’s Twister for 87.5. Corey had 168 on two.

 In the championship round there were five riders out of fifteen who made qualified rides and all were above 90. Cooper Kanngiesser scored 91 aboard McCrazy (Mike Johnson) to tie for 4/5 in the round and win the event with 264.5 on three head.

It was Corey Davis who tied with Cooper. Corey rode Bumbaca’s Easy Street and had 259 on three head.

Danny McDowell scored 93 when he made a great ride aboard Burruss’ Standoff to tie with Wesley Silcox for 1/2 in the round. Wesley rode Bumbaca’s Auger. The last ride was Travis Sellers aboard Murphy’s Buckshot for 91.5.

The fans really got their money’s worth will all those great rides in the short go.

When he was interviewed after winning the event Cooper thanked the George Paul family and the CBR for helping him make a dream come true. Of all the events he has won this was one of the best. Everyone wants to win this legendary event.

Bobby Paul said that the CBR’s production of the annual George Paul Memorial was the best in 20 years. The event means a lot to all riders but it has a special place in CBR President Tuff Hedeman’s heart. Tuff is one of just two riders to ever win this event three times. For Tuff this was a thrill to be able to bring the best riders and bull sin for this event.

Guilherme Marchi Wins Third PBR Event Of 2008

The first time BFTS event held in Des Moines Iowa kept fans on the edges of their seats as it was filled with great rides and some terrible wrecks. After the dust had settled   the event title went to number one in the standings, Guilherme Marchi.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

 In round one Guilherme made a good ride aboard #10 Bucking Bulls’ Bad Brad for 86 points and 13th position in the round. The bull who scored 42.25 was not that impressive as he went around to the left away from Guilherme's hand then jumped out of the spin and faked right and faked left. In round two he rode Chad Berger/Clay Struve's Spiderman for 84.75 and 15th place in the round. The bull only scored 41.50 and like in round one was unimpressive as he took two leaps out then went around to the left with no timing. In the short go Guilherme rode D&H's Bad Yeller for 88.25 and third place in the round. The bull whoa scored 44   was not as good as he should have been for that bull score. He went around to the left away from Guilherme's hand after having taken three leaps out of the chute with belly kicks alternating with cow kicks. I guess I just don't agree with the judges much since Cody Custer has left. Personally I would not have scored that bull over 42, if that. Still it gave Guilherme 259 points on three head and the win. Guilherme had to wait for the last rider before he knew that he was the winner as Adriano Moraes was leading the pack going into the short go and if he rode he would have won the event as all he needed was 82 points to take the lead back. Instead Sam's Town blew out of the chute with Adriano with so much power faking right in a long jump then faking left to throw Adriano off that Adriano’s chaps blew apart. The bull scored a well-deserved 44.50

There were 14 rides in round one with Colby Yates being the first one out on Just A Dream. Colby scored 86.75 and was 11th in the round while the bull, which scored 42.25, went around to the left into Colby's hand and flattened out.

The next four riders (Vince Northrup, Pistol Robinson, Kolt Donaldson and Ned Cross all lost out to the bulls they had drawn. Finally Clayton Foltyn broke that mode as he rode Frosty for 88.25 and a tie for 5/7 in the round. The bull is a good spinner and went around to the right into Clayton's hand

By the time Leah updated us on the injuries there had been 13 riders bucked off and only two qualified rides. Leah let us know that Chris' surgery was put off until Friday and he will be out several weeks.

I don't know what kind of bull score Marcus got but Wiley Petersen got a re-ride option when the bull just faked right along the chutes then reversed left with little action. Unfortunately Wiley's re-ride did not work out well as Fire and Flame faked right and left then pulled Wiley off over his head. That bull scored 42.50.

Zack Brown looked good aboard Splat Cat who went around to the right away from Zack's hand. Zack tied for 5/7 with 88.25 while the bull scored 43.50.

Bells Blue might have bucked Ednei Caminhas off but his bull score was only 39.25 as he loped.

Austin Meier looked good aboard Texas who went around to the left into Austin's hand with good action. Austin scored 88.50 and was 4th in the round while Texas scored 43.

During the event we learned that although Reese Cates made little of his broken finger, the hand surgeon decided that he did need surgery and Reese will be out for a while.

Dustin Hall rode Savage for 86.25 and 12th place in the round as the bull was around to the left away from Dustin's hand and Dustin was out of shape and nearly off to the side as the bull reversed to the right into Dustin's hand. Savage scored 42.75.

On the whole the bull scores were better this week although some of them did seem inflated.

Bryan Richardson looked good aboard Why Not Minot who scored 43 as Bryan scored 87.50 and finished 8th in the round. Bryan stayed out over his rope as the bull went around to the right away from Bryan's hand.

Aaron Pass has it! This 15 year old looking 19 year old reminds me of Chris Shivers. As Bo Alameda went around to the left into Aaron's hand, Aaron remained in perfect position and complete control .I thought the judges were a little stingy when they scored him at 87(10th place) and the bull at 43.Aar on made a textbook ride and it should have been at least an 88. Welcome to the big leagues, Aaron.

Papa Smurf fouled himself at the gate so Mike White got the option of a re-ride. JW Hart made it sound as if Mike purposely fouls some of the bulls by spurring them as they leap out. I guess I will have to watch more closely. Mike drew Three Alarm for the re-ride who went around to the right into Mike's hand then reversed left away while Mike made a good spur ride but there was a judge's review and they got Mike for a slap at 7.75.Mike didn't get the Enterprise bonus of $5000 but the bull's owner Jerry Nelson did.

Kasey Hayes will be out of action because Page 499 yard darted Kasey and although he was able to get up and walk Kasey did fracture C6 and will undergo fusion surgery at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines. I knew Kasey had most likely fractured C6 or C5 when I saw the way he was yard darted. It reminded me of the wreck I had seen several years ago here in Nashville when Gilbert Carrillo did the same thing. Here's wishing you a speedy recovery, Kasey.

Adriano Moraes looked great aboard Evil Forces who went around to the left into Adriano's hand in a drifting fast spin with lots of kick. Adriano scored 90.25 and was second in the round.

He was followed by Renato Nunes aboard Crossroads who went around to the left into Renato's hand then reversed right at the end. Renato spurred the bull for extra needed points, as the bull was kind of flat. Renato scored 88.25 to tie for 5/7 and the bull scored 43.25.

Luke Snyder was next aboard Frontier Rodeo's Flash who spun around to the right into Luke's hand with rear and drop. Luke remained centered and in perfect position and made another great looking ride. He’s been doing great this season and I sure am glad. Luke scored 90.75 and won the round while the bull scored 44.50.

 Ross Coleman finished 9th in the round with a solid ride aboard The Geetus who was around to the left away from Ross' hand with lots of kick. Ross cored 87.25 and the bull scored.

Another good ride was Kody Lostroh aboard Montego Bay who scored 43.50, as he was around to the left into Kody’s hand with high kicks in a good spin. Kody was 3rd in the round with 88.75.

 

Round Two began with a really high score as LJ Jenkins rode Chad Berger/Denny Hawks' Scaredy Cat for 92 points as the bull who scored 45 went around to the right onto Kody's hand with high kicks. Kody remained in complete control and also made a good spur ride. His score held and he won the round.

Clayton Foltyn rode Why Not Minot for 88.75 and 5th place in the round. The bull that scored 43.75 took one huge leap forward before going around to the right into Clayton's hand. He was followed by Colby Yates' 13/14th place tie aboard Hoosier Daddy. The bull took one leap out with good rear and drop then went into a fast but flat spin into Colby's hand while Colby made a good spur ride. His score was 86 while the bull scored 41.25.

Guilherme Marchi scored 84.75 on Spiderman who took two leaps out then went around to the left with no timing.

Kolt Donaldson who is riding with a broken rib scored 87.75 aboard Mean Machine who scored 43.The bull was into his hand to the right with good timing.

 Dustin Elliott was second in the round with 91.75 aboard Walk The Line who scored 45.25. The bull faked right then went into a tight left spin with good action.

Renato Nunes aboard Montego Bay followed him. Renato was 6th in the round with 88.50 while the bull scored 43.Rena to didn't spur till the end of the ride as the bull was around to he left into Renato's hand.

Austin Meier rode Big Rig for 86.25 points and 12th place in the round while Big Rig scored 42.25.The bull took three leaps forward before seagoing around to the left into Austin's hand while Austin made a good spur ride.

 It was good to see Matt Bohon make a solid ride aboard Keep Wishin who faked left then spun right then reversed back left. Matt tied for 16/17 with his score of 84.50 while the bull scored 42.25.

Brian Canter looked good when he scored 89.75 aboard Flash who was around to the right away from Brian's hand. Brian tied for 3/4 while the bull scored 44.

Adriano Moraes rode Mataska for 87.25 and a tie for 9/11 in the round. Mataska was around to the right away from Adriano's hand with good action. Adriano looked great and they best remember its not over till the fat lady sings and the way Adriano is riding now..... I think it would be great for him to go out as a four time PBR World Champion! The bull scored 43.

JB Mauney scored 86 aboard Wildfire who has lost a step and scored 42.25. The bull was around to the left into JB's hand then jumped forward before reversing right. JB tied for 13/14.

I still haven't seen Mike White cause a bull to foul. He scored 89.75 to tie with Brian Canter for 3/4 in the round. Mike rode Splat Kat who was around to he right into Mike's hand then reversed left away while Mike made a good spur ride. The bull scored 43.75.

Harve Stewart looked good aboard Malibu who was around to the right into Harve's hand while Harve also made a good spur ride. He scored 88 and finished 7th in the round while the bull scored 43.75.

Valdiron de Oliveira scored 84.50 to tie for 16/17 as Two Spot didn't have his usual trip and took two long lunges out then faked right before going around to the left away from Valdiron's hand. The bull scored 41.75.

 Some rides not shown on the broadcast were Ned Cross' 87.25 aboard Husker's Terror who scored 43.25. Cross was tied for 9/11 in the round with brain Hermann aboard Little Coyote and Adriano.

Harve Stewart keeps looking better each ride. He scored 90.50 in the short go aboard Nervous Waters who was around to the left away from Harve's hand in a drifting spin then reversed right and Harve hung on to the end. He finished second in the round and third in the event. The bull scored 45.75.

Zack Brown won the short go with a great ride aboard Sir Patrick who went into a fast spin to the right away from Zack's hand after faking left. Zack never bobbled and scored 90.75, which pushed him into second place in the event. The bull score 44.50.

It looked like Kody Lostroh was going to get a good score aboard Harlan Robertson's Big Rig who was around to the left into Kody's hand with high kicks while Kody made a good spur ride. It would have taken the lead but the judges reviewed the ride and said NS; that Kody was off at 7.8.

Mike White got another re-ride option when God's Gift hipped himself so.... His re-ride aboard Say I Won't Gunner was a buck off.

It was all in the bulls favor until Guilherme Marchi rode Bad Yeller for 88.25 and third place in the round.

The worst wreck of the night came when Little Slim threw Austin Meier out the back door and as he hung up the bull's foot stepped on his shoulder slamming his head to the ground. Austin was knocked out and carried out after regaining consciousness. He does have a concussion but might need to have his shoulder and/or neck x-rayed. He was going to be re-evaluated later on.

The CBR At Lubbock ,TX Revisited

Although I gave a brief report of the event earlier I did not see the rides till tonight so I will fill in some blanks with the following  rewritten article.

The ABC Rodeo CBR Challenge Event

The CBR held this event  at the end of the PRCA's ABC Rodeo in Lubbock,TX  on Sunday, April 6 ; and several of its riders who have been called up to the BFTS of the PBR flew right back from Nampa to compete  there. Jay Morrow(Wayland,IA) won his first CBR title as he managed to beat out five World Champions for this event title. In the fifth section of the long go Jay scored 86 aboard Scott Burruss' Twister  who stumbled out of the chute  to the left then went into a right spin into Jay's hand  to tie for 10/11 in the round with Steve Woolsey. Jay never bobbled once In the long go  he faced off against  the Hurst/Garrett/Dyess bull Carney Man, a son of my favorite Hot Damn, for a great 91 point ride to win both the Championship round and the event title. The bull who kneeled in the chute  leaped up and was around to the left with lots of kick and elevation. Jay was perfect  as he stayed up on his rope. Condolences to Pistol Robinson  and his family on the loss of his mother who had battled MS courageously for several years .Pistol made it back from Nampa  but bucked off of Rich Bumbaca's  Twigs  & Berries.

PRCA World Champion Cody Hancock has been riding hot this season and looking like the Cody Hancock of old.He rode Alan Murphy's Rocky for 84.5 as the bull took two leaps out then faked left before spinning to the right into Cody's hand.It was a good ride but awful get off as Cody landed flat on his back and was slow getting up.

 He was followed by Chance Smart aboard Murphy's Border Patrol  for 87 points. The bull faked right and left then went around to the right into Chance's hand before reversing  left away.

Brandon Edwards rode Murphy's Itch & Scratch for 85 while  the bull faked left and right  then went around to the right into Brandon's hand  while flattening out .

 CBR 2007 World Champion Bonner Bolton rode Murphy's Cherokee Fiddler for 86.5 as another of my favorite bulls took two out  then faked left then went around to the right into Bonner's hand.  Got to love that bull.After all the real Cherokee fiddler was my husband's great grand uncle Fiddlin' John Totten.

Howdy Cloud ended the  first section with an 87 point ride aboard Murphy's Chrome Molly who was around to the left away from Howdy's hand then jumped out of the spin and bucked straight  left before  reversing around to the right.

Quite a few of the CBR riders who ride PBR made it back for this event.In the second section Murphy's Mellow Yellow bucked off Jarrod Craig  as the bull took three leaps straight to the right then went around to the left fast throwing Jarrod off over his head.  Clayton Williams got a score aboard Murphy's Deuce Bigalow for 77 points.

In the third section PRCA World Champion Wesley Silcox rode Scott Burruss' Brass Apache for 86.5 as the bull faked left and right then went around to the right into a drifting spin with lots of action .Wesley made a textbook ride.

Burruss' Bad Moon  was a good draw for Cooper Kanngiesser who won the long go with a good ride for 88 points as the bull was around to the right with all fours off the ground and good kicks.Cooper dressed it up with a good spur ride. He was followed by Steve Woolsey aboard Burruss' Medicine Man for 86 who went around to the left into Steve's hand alternating good kicks with belly kicks.  Tony Smart  was aboard Burruss' Evil Eye for 83.

Section four began with Francisco Morales 84 point ride aboard Mike Johnson's Captain Jack who was around to the right away from Francisco's hand. Douglas Duncan rode Lyndal Hurst's Fat Jimmy for 87.5 who took three  jumps to the left in place before going around to the right away from Douglas' hand with lots of kick.He was  followed by Laddan Ledbetter aboard Hurst's Chino for 87 as the bull  took two hops out then was around to the right  into laddan's hand with lots of kick .Bronson Butcher finished the round off with 87.5 aboard Hurst's Ludicrus  who was around to the left into his hand  with a hop and a skip.The bull had good timing and action.

Yet another one who flew back from Nampa ,Reese Cates bucked off of the Guidry /Hurst bull Mooseknuckle. CBR/PRCA World Champion Matt Austin scored 85.5 aboard Jesse Hill's  Parachute and  was thrilled to finally get a solid ride although he still didn't feel completely up to par.The bull was around to the right into matt's hand and got Matt leaned back towards the end. 

Mike Moore was the last qualified ride in the section with 87 aboard Glen Southwick's  Curious George who faked left and right then went around to the right away from Mike's hand. Cooper Kanngieser won the long go.

There were only three qualified rides in the Championship round starting with Cooper Kanngiesser's 89 point ride aboard Smokin Joe who was around to the left away from Cooper's hand before jumping out of it then faking left and reversing right Cooper had 177 on two head and was tied with Jay Morrow..Then it was all the bulls  until Wesley Silcox's managed to hang on  for  87.5 ride aboard Scott Burruss' Georgia Sun who  was around to the left away from Wesley's hand in a solid ride. It had to be har don Wesley and although he made a textbook ride  he had to be worried as his traveling partner  had bucked off right before him and was injured.Steve Woolsey bucked off of Owen's Eleven who took one leap out then went around to the left while moving forward in the spin. Steve took a shot in his head from the bull's horn and was knocke dout.They carried him out on a backboard and intended to take him to the hospital but inJoAnna Blackwell's report  she said he was talking and knew whee he was and  was okay.

 The winning ride in the round and the event was Jay Morrow's 91 point ride aboard Carney Man.Jay had tied with Cooper Kanngiesser with 177 on two but the back judge awarded the win to Jay by a fraction. Usually this means that  Cooper's score in the short go  had a higher bull score than rider score.If both had been identical then they would have shared the title.

 Be sure to catch the CBR on RFD-TV this Wednesday evening.The Lubbock event will air on April 30th.

 The next  CBR event will be the George Paul Memorial in Del Rio , TX on May 3 and 4.This  legendary event is the oldest stand alone bull riding.The same slate of  40 top riders will compete in two long rounds and one short round this year rather than two different slate swith the  winner announced after the end of the second  day..

Chad Castillo will undergo surgery on his shoulder after the George Paul Memorial with Dr Tandy Freeman doing the surgery. Zack Oakes is out for 4-6 months with a broken hip that requires surgery while Mike Moore is riding well with three broken toes. Clint Craig is staying out a few more weeks  while his fractured shoulder heals; and John Jacobs is out for 4-8 weeks with a broken collarbone. Ardie Maier's recent MRI of his broken neck looked good and the doctors feel right now that he won't require surgery. Good luck to everyone riding in Del Rio.Good luck to Mary Ramos who has left the CBR to start her  own business in  Longview ,TX. I sure will miss Mary.She always made us feel very welcome  when Teri Lann and I made it to events to cover them live.
