Don't Take Language for Granted
Monday, January 14, 2008
By Monica Davis –
Language, culture and power are interconnected and the death of a culture's language is the death of the culture itself.
Kansas City, MO - infoZine - So often, we take all of them for granted, assuming that we will always be able to speak, communicate and discourse. But, that is not always true, not for those whose speech is impaired, or whose minds will no longer allow them to manipulate words, concepts, ideas and message. And it is most certainly not true of those whose memories are so terrible, that they burn in the telling.
All over the world, through the ravages of time, we are losing our elders, losing touch with our oral history, and slowly drifting away from the anchors of civilized culture. For many native people, those whose numbers are rapidly dwindling, this is a living death.
A Lakota friend of mine is engaged in an oral history project, which may well take her years to complete. She is chronicling the life experiences and oral traditions of several Lakota female elders on the Pine Ridge Reservation in Pine Ridge, South Dakota.
In Native cultures around the world, the elders are dying, and taking their native languages to the grave with them. People whose numbers once ranged into the millions are now down to a handful of native speakers, and, when those speakers die, so does the language of their respective cultures, along with the collected oral history of those who came before.
According to linguists, more than 7,000 languages will die over the next century, leaving a dangerous vacuum in the human body politic. For it is the language of the people which reflects its soul, and the cumulative soul of the human race is slowly disintegrating.
Our vibrant languages, tongues, which have a dozen words for ice, or lyrical languages that soothe the soul, even though the listener doesn't understand a word, are slowly fading into oblivion. With the disappearance of those languages, goes a piece of human history, which can never be recreated by human hands.
For all of our arrogance, for all of our hijacking of the word "civilization", western man is woefully ignorant of the language, folkways and history of the world in which he lives. Sadly, he parades his ignorance as superiority, and has spent centuries destroying other cultures, uncaring of the knowledge that was lost with his plundering, as have barbarians who long came before him.
Native American language and culture have been under assault for generations, particularly by federal policies in both the United States and Canada. From the mid-Nineteenth century until as late as 1975, hundreds of thousands of Native children were forced to attend distant 'residential schools' from the age or 4 or 5 to 16. And, in those ensuing years, they were forbidden to use their native tongue, forbidden to come home, forcibly separated from the culture, which birthed them.
Lawsuits have been filed over the alleged abuse, rape and murder, which reportedly took place in those schools, but, for those who survived, the separation from family, adults and culture took a hard toll.
Culture is passed from one generation to another, as is civilized behavior, socialization and language. Forcible assimilation, distant schooling at extremely young ages, in addition to the reported rape, beating and murder, which many residential school attendees say was endemic in both Canada and the United States, took a heavy toll on indigenous populations in North America.
Many people blame the madness in the 'residential schools' to much of the dysfunction in today's Native American and indigenous enclaves. Referring to alleged atrocities at the residential schools, William Combs told reporters, "I saw children being buried at the Catholic residential school in Kamloops. I saw a lot of kids die there. I'm upset the church has gotten away with murdering them." (Aboriginal survivors Press Release)
How many of the residential school students have Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome (PTSD), due to their years of residence at these schools? How many generations of dysfunctional adults passed their own dysfunction on to their kids and communities?
Now, in addition to the cultural trauma of having children ripped from their cultures for six generations and placed in residential schools, indigenous communities are now dealing with the flip side of residential school's trans-generational byproduct-parents who have no parenting skills. Today, Native American children are grossly over-represented in the nation's foster care populations, as the below shown table enumerates.
In some states, Native American children represent as much as 51% of their representative state's foster care population, while comprising no more than 20% of any one state's population. In one state, Native American children make up 10% of the state's foster care population, while only comprising 1% of the state's general population. (Press Release, American Indian Children Overrepresented in Nation's Foster Care System)
The report, titled Time for Reform: A Matter of Justice for American Indian and Alaskan Native Children, found that nationally, American Indian and Alaskan Native children were reported to the state and found to be victims of child abuse and neglect at the rate of 16.5 per 1,000 American Indian and Alaskan Native children. This rate compares to 19.5 for African American children, 16.1 for Pacific Islander children, 10.8 for White children, and 10.7 for Hispanic children. Native American children are more likely than children of other races/ethnicities to be identified as victims of neglect (65.5%), and they are least likely to be identified as victims of physical abuse (7.3%). (Ibid)
Referring to the monies awarded former residents of these residential schools through a class action lawsuit, one angry woman told fellow bloggers that there was no way for the mainstream religious organizations which perpetrated savageries in the residential school to ever buy their way out of the atrocities. For her, what happened in those schools was perpetrated by monsters, pure and simple. Unfortunately, those deeds of those monsters still lives in the form of the dysfunctional adults, the damaged minds, and the broken souls they left in their wake.
Left behind are a people with an over representation of child neglect, substance abuse and mental anguish, mind pain that is so powerful, even drugs and alcohol can not hold the memories at bay. The old ways, the language, the ties that bind people together as a culture and community have been under assault for two centuries.
Even more telling about the destruction of a culture is the casual rape perpetrated by males of the so-called dominant culture. Forcible assimilation through kidnapping and residential instruction and deculturalization of a culture's children is only one step in the process of destroying a people. Add sexual attack, rape and dehumanization to the mix, and you have yet another tier.
There is a Lakota saying, "A people are not defeated until the heartsof its women are on the ground." In times gone by-and still occurring in some communities, raping a woman of color was a right of passage, or a proof of manhood for white males. Even today, according to recent case studies, "U.S. indigenous women face 3.5 times the average rate of rape in the U.S. Some 82% of assailants are white men."
.
The Delaney sisters, African American twins who lived well past 100 years of age, related how black families had to keep their female children out of harms way, or, rather out of the way of potential white rapists. Because it didn't take much for a black man to get lynched in those days, blacks practiced prevention-they kept their daughters as far away from white men as they could, because their fathers were in no position to defend their helpless kin. (Sadie and Bessie Delaney, Having Our Say)
When the last native speaker of these cultures dies, there will be no one left to sing the songs, tell the stories and pass on their legacies. There will be no elders to pass their wisdom on to the next generation. If some have their way, there will be no next generation.

CBR News For January, 2008
by Sheila Totten
The CBR World Championship will be held January 25th and 26th in Las Vegas , Nevada at the South Point Hotel and Casino. Its going to exciting and full of action with great bulls and top riders.
When the CBR had their last event of the season in Jackson,MS. , Cole Echols(Frierson,Louisiana) won the event title and jumped into third place in the CBR's Crown Royal World Standings.Echols rode Scott Burruss' 500 Redneck in the long go for 87 points to tie with Willis Trosclair(Thibodaux,Louisiana) for 3/4 in the round.Echols made a great ride on Diamond K Bucking Bulls' Jack Hammer in the short go for 91.5 taking first in both the event and the short go.
Kenny Westrope rode Jesse Hill's Sting in the short go for 90 points for second place in the round and fifth in the event. Westrope and Friday Wright had both been called back for the short go and both did well. Wright rode Scott Burruss' Foolish Man for 87 and third place in the round and sixth place in the event.
Pistol Robinson remains in first place in the standings. He won the long go with 89.5 aboard one of my all time favorites from Lufkin Ranch and Rodeo,Spanky. Pistol was second in the event.
Dusty Gailey took advantage of the last event of the season to make it into the top 45 headed for the World Finals by riding LRR's Maverick for 88.5 in the long go for second place in the round and third place in the event. Willis Trosclair also secured a spot in the top 45 with his 87 points aboard Paul Daniel's Rena's Pet. Willis was fourth in the event.
There were lots of great bulls there per usual with only 9 qualified rides in the long go and three in the short go. Lots of excitement and action as the bulls won every round. Our friend Wesley Cryer came down off a a really good young bull from LRR- Maverick. He's another Zorro.I have watched Wes ride with no vest and using a flank strap for a bull rope many times. He's a great rider and once he gets back into shape watch out! He'll be headed straight for the gold.!
Now its on to Vegas this weekend for the CBR Finalists. Several of the top riders are unable to be there to compete once again because of being locked into contracts which have them obligated to ride elsewhere. Along with the riders the top 25 NBBA Classic Finalist bulls will be competing there. These are some really great young bulls who already have proven themselves by bucking off many top riders or by giving some high scoring rides. Leading the pack are LRR's Derringer and Maverick and Chuck Griffith sure has something to be proud of in them. Right on their heels is Lyndal Hurst's Full Throttle who really performs .There are bulls from Jason Diedrich,(JR's Jacket),Hurst/Ohl/Garrett/Dyess(Carney Man),Skat Jacket, L&G Cattle Co ,Sam T Straight, Bobby Harrison,Black Jacket, L&G Cattle Co, Apache Warrior, Bruce Bucking Bulls / Tino Martinez,Chipaway, Bryce Cooper,Wrangler Magic, Jerome Scallions,Chalupa, Lyndal Hurst,Black Mamba, Bruce Bucking Bulls / Tino Martinez, rain Robber, Murphy Ranch & Rodeo,Ugly Water, Bobby Richards,Excavator, Brian Piatiak,Apollo 1, Alvin Jones,Rehab, Lyndal Hurst, High Dollar Habit, Flenniken Cattle Co,Copan Cat, Lonnie Brown,Wild Nights, Greg Willingham / Fred Robinson, and Starbucks, Pat Taylor.

PBR News-Mike Lee Tops The Field In Atlanta
With riders who are right up on their game like Robson Palermo, two time World Champion Chris Shivers,Kody Lostroh ,Wiley Petersen. and Luke Snyder this is going to be quite a race for the gold unless the inane new formats ruin the race.I am talking about the draft which will be used at three day events and the winner take all events. The latter is by far the most unfair because it gives one rider a major advantage over the other riders when it comes to the qualifier standings.I have always spoken out against the way the PBR has qualified riders for years because I do not think its fair that riders who have been on the BFTS all season can be cut from the Finals by riders who might have never been on the tour but made all their money in the touring pro divisions.Touring pro money should qualify you for the CT Finals only and then invite the top 5 from that who are not already on the BFTS to the Finals. This new "winner take all" means that one rider will win $100,000 at the specified events and the rest of the riders will get zilch! No long go winner,no short go winner. No payouts to anyone but the event winner. You can have 15 riders who ride all their bulls but they receive zero.I am really surprised riders agents have not threatened a walk out as would happen in major league sports.Could you see it if say only the quarterback on the winning team got paid all season.Ok , so the players in major sports are under contract but look at the PGA,look at NASCAR,look at all other competitive sports. There would be cries of unfair practice coming from all the other participants. Then the draft. No one likes that idea.Again, unfair advantage.Anyone can buck off in round one but the draft might keep those riders from getting a bull they could score on in the subsequent rounds. The guys at the top of the leaderboard will pick the best bulls to score on.If I were in charge I'd be firing whomever came up with these ideas. The fans hate the ideas and without fans you have nothing.
And who is the clown who came up with the idea to run the bulls from 15th street to 17th street at Union Square as part of the promotion for the MSG event?Especially not knowing if the streets will be slick or not. I hate it when the people from PETA and SHARK demonstrate but whomever the dummy is who came up with this idea is just inviting them to demonstrate. This is NYC,not Pamplona or Chihuahua. This is pavement not dirt roads !Pavement which regardless of weather conditions if a bull urinates or defecates it can cause a slippery problem for the rest of the herd. And you never know what people in NY may do.Some may feel this is like Spain and try and jump over barricades;and if they are the usual barricades the bulls can take them down. Then having 10 top riders on horseback "trying to stay in the saddle against a bevy of bulls" as the PBR has put it is out and out STUPID! If city noises panic the bulls-STAMPEDE! And the way some of these bulls go after the outriders in the arena.Get real everyone.I am praying there are no injuries to riders or bulls or bystanders. My own bulls are not wild and crazy and I know when I move them from one side of the road to pasture on the other what they are like. They will run up road banks etc so be prepared .
Getting back to the Atlanta event; it was a weekend of Champions doing it right. Adriano Moraes was flawless as he topped all three of his bulls. He was happy and having fun and was the first man to ride both his second round bull and the short go bull who had been unridden till Adriano mounted them in Atlanta. Adriano tied for 2/3 with fellow Brazilian Paolo Crimber who feels that, after 8 years on the tour this might be his year to win the World Title.
Chris Shivers looked great this weekend although our ABA 2007 Bull of The Year, The Game(Brandon Gaspar) bucked him off in the short go.Super rider against a super bull. The Game is hard enough to ride if you are a bigger rider but this big bull has so much power that smaller riders like Shivers and Brian Canter would have little to no chance on him. He's no day off for anyone but he is a good, power packed honest bucker.
Kody Lostroh led the pack coming into the second round with 88.50.He rodeThrillville who spun to the left into his hand for 85.50 in round two and he was awarded the Enterprise $5000 bonus.I must have missed something because in round one Wiley was awarded the bonus as he won the event title at the Finals.I had not seen anything about a change in those rules but Lostroh, who won round one here was allowed to be the Enterprise Bonus rider in round two.Maybe this is yet another change and next week Mike Lee only gets to ride for that in round one.I sure don't know but then I still am really confused with the way the rerides have been handled too. When a bull does not hip himself and a rider scores 80 or over and he gets a reride when another rider with a 76.5 does not..... That did happen this weekend. At anyrate Lostroh had 174 on two and was second in the standings so he went on to face Hot Pistol in the short go who bucked him off as he leaped forward .
Chris Shivers went into the short go in the lead with 174.50 on two head and because the "first to fail" has been dropped the fans were on the edge of their seats right down to the last ride of the Short Go. Chris rode Diamond S' Big Iron for 88 points and second place in round two and looked great aboard the bull. The bull spun to the right away from Chris' hand and he was picture perfect. When Leah interviewed him he said "It feels good. I'm just having fun on these bulls and I'm riding them jump for jump."Chris ,like Adriano and Wiley has gone back to basics and it sure is paying off.Its no shame to buck off of The Game. He's going to be a bull to reckon with now that he's in the PBR.He spun to the left with speed and power into Chris' hand but had him off at 4.3.The Game might have been our 2007 ABA Bull of The Year but you may be looking at the PBR's next World Champion bull! The Game had the high bull score of the event with 45.5..
VS. didn't show Greg Potter's round two winning ride on Woodruff/XS Ranch Red Chester for 88.5 but the score was enough to get Greg into the short go on one head. Unfortunately Train Wreck had Greg right off and he finished in 14th place.Brian Canter was third in round two with 87 aboard Hebert's Start Me Up who faked right then spun left into Brian's hand with good spur action. Brian went into the short go with 170 on two head.He made a good ride on Boyd/Floyd's Lost In Paradise who spun to the left into Brian's hand then jumped out of the spin and reversed right. Brian scored 87.50 points and was 4th in the event and the round..Two time World Champion Mike Lee tied with Valderon de Olivero in round two with 86 points. Mike rode Martinez's Far West who spun to the left into Mike's hand but Mike lost a few points as his free jerked around thanks to the bull's power. Mike went into the short go with170.75 on two head and we all know what happened there.Mike won both the round and the event.
Valdiron de Olivero rode Robinson/Larry The Cable Guy's Atta Boy in round two who took two leaps out before spinning to the right into Valderon's hand..Valderon didn't make the short go because he DQ's in round one.Kasey Hayes scored 86.75 in round one and got into the short go on the basis of that ride.He drew Encore who spun to the right away from his hand and bucked off.To add insult to injury he's going to be sore as Encore kicked him on the way down..McKennon Wimberley scored 75.75 on Jack Russell in round two who faked right then bucked in place three times before reversing left with belly kicks. Not a good trip and unlike his CBR partner Clayton Williams ,McKennon was awarded a reride option but turned it down In round one with a similiar score Clay was not given the option.
McKennon entered the short go with 157.25 but drew Red Carpet who beat McKennon around the corner as he spun to the right away from McKennon's hand. Sean Willingham had the fans unhappy when he was only awarded 82 points for his ride on Slimdini,a small bull who spun to the right into Sean's hand in a flat spin with no kick just like the bull Kasey Hayes rode and scored 77.25 on. I don't know if the fans wanted a higher score for Sean or felt it was too high compared to Showstopper's previous performance with Kasey.Oh well,I'm not a judge. Sean faced Blizzard in the short go who took a fast leap out then spun to the right ,tossing Sean down. He finished with 164.50 in the event.Travis Briscoe scored 80.25 aboard Tony Sharp's Hammer Down who circled left into Travis' hand with not much action.Travis entered the short go with 166.75 on two head and faced off against Robinson/Tedesco/Larry The Cable Guy's Booger Butt who leaped out wildly with three high in place jumps then spun to the left into Travis' hand then jumped out of the spin.Travis scored 85 and had 251.75 on three head.He was 5th in the round and 5th in the event.
Robson Palermo rode Doris in the second round for 80.50 and turned down the option of a reride.Doris circled left away from Palermo's hand then jumped forward and bucked straight. In the short go he drew Chicken On A Chain who had a bad trip and sure didn't look like the World Champion he is. He took one leap out then faked left then turned back to the left into Robson's hand with not much action.Robson scored 84.25 and had 251 on three head..He was 6th in the event.Nick Landreneau's ride in round two was not shown. He bucked off of What I Say,a small bull in the short go who spun to the right away from his hand.Nick over rode the bull and as he spurred aggressively he lost hold and came down at 7.2.
Luke Snyder has been riding well and entered the short go with 168.25 on two after riding Moon Dog who spun to the right into his hand for 81.75 in round two.In the short go he bucked off of Party Time as the bull spun to the right immediately out of the gate. Paolo Crimber is a man on a mission. He rode Shake & Bake in round two for 84.50 as the bull took one leap out of the chute then faked right with a belly roll then spun to the left away from his hand with good action. He entered the short go with170.50 where he rode Hebert's Shane for 87. 75 as the bull spun to the left away from his hand.Paolo kept moving forward on the bull's back ,correcting himself. He finished in a tie for 2/3 in the round and event with fellow Brazilian Adriano Moraes with 258 on three head.
Three time PBR World Champion Adriano Moraes rode the highest rated bull in round one and then in round two he took on Physical Education who was unridden till then . Adriano looked great on him and it sure looked like he deserved a higher score as the bull took two leaps out then spun to the left into Adriano's hand for 84.50.Adriano made a textbook ride and told Leah"Just having fun, enjoying my friends, enjoying the fans." In the short go Adriano drew Martinez's Buckwheat and he did everything right again, riding this bull who had never given up a ride before Adriano. The bull made the mistake of spinning to the left into Adriano's hand and Adriano owned him.He scored 87.75 and tied for 2/3 in the round with Paolo and for 2/3 in the event again with Paolo at 258 points.
Wiley Petersen has been on top of his game this weekend as he rode Devil Dog in round two for 84.25.The bull had lots of direction change and Wiley kept moving with him jump for jump He scored 84.25 and was third on the leaderboard until Gnash bucked him off in the short go.
It was a good event and the excitement was there. I wish the PBR would reconsider and drop the draft idea before next weekend. The fans and riders (lower tier) I have spoken to do not like the idea at all. Would like to hear your opinions on the draft, the winner takes all and the running of the bulls..

AOL ate my report "Mike Lee Wins BFTS At Atlanta
Sorry everyone but I had my report all done and had hit save when AOL Journals said the page could not be accessed at the time and try again later.meanwhile my entire report disappeared!I guess that teaches me not to back it up before printing it. It should have been up this morning but thanks to AOL...I will do a a brief summation here and promise to redo the report asap.
2004 PBR World Champion Mike Lee made a great 90.25 ride in the Championship Round at the PBR's Atlanta event aboard Hot Stuff who took two lunging leaps out then spun left into Mike's hand while Mike spurred aggressively and showed that he was in complete control. Fans were glad that the PBR did away with their inane"First to fail" format and this event went down to the last ride .Two time World Champion Chris Shivers faced Brandon Gaspar's ABA 2007 Bull of The Year The Game for the final ride. of the event. If Chris rode then he would have won but The Game remains unridden in the PBR.
A full report will follow.Meanwhile although people were thrilled that we are back to the normal order of rides in the short go they quickly voiced their unanimous opinion on chats that they dislike intensely the PBR's latest idea of the draft where the top of the leader board rider gets to pick his own bull for round two of a three day event and so on down the line. The riders in the cellar will face the bulls no one els ewants.People are saying that is cheating. They also hate the idea of the bulls running down streets in NYC as if it were Pampaloma,Spain and having riders on horseback waiting for the bulls at the far end. This is bull riding and not Vince McMahon's wrestling shows.Get back to basics like Adriano,Chris Shivers,Wiley and so many other riders have done. All the fans care about are the rides.Read the various message boards and sites .The fans hate these new ideas. And the latest change-several events where only one rider will take home all the money.Fresno is scheduled to be the first of these events with $100,000 purse going to one rider.Again the fans think it reeks of cheating the natural odds as to make it to the Finals its not points but money earned that counts. If it was $100,000 added money as a bonus it would not be so bad but this way it means 44 riders cannot earn any money that event for the qualification standings. That is messed up.I think Spire needs to reinstate the old board and stop coming up with these ideas that are not fair to fans or riders ; and as they sure don't pay my salary you can count on me to speak out. I invite everyone who reads this to speak out here on these issues .
